Product Description

From the Inside Flap

The rugged ‘racoon-like’ cat, saluted as the State Cat of Maine, USA, the Maine Coon has rallied followers from the four corners of America to every port around the world. The breed’s abundant, weather-proof coat and its characteristic tipped ears make the Maine Coon instantly recognizable, as does its magnificent tail and overall size. This is a true outdoor cat with a heart of gold, a healthy appetite for companionship and adventure and a sensible approach to the world at large. The Maine Coon owner will welcome the advice from American author Tracey K Hayman about the proper care, training and health of this natural, no-nonsense feline. The author provides a thorough discussion about the breed’s probable (and fanciful) origins, its unparalleled rise to fame in the modern era and a description of the Maine Coon’s physical characteristics and personality. The book also offers sensible suggestions about selecting a kitten, maintenance, breeding and exhibiting. Mrs Hayman’s text is enhanced by the accompanying colour photography, both enlivening the chapters and illustrating vital points about the breed. In all, this book presents over 100 colour photographs and illustrations, including some never-before-seen scanning electron micrograph images produced exclusively for this series. As attractive as it is informative, this book also addresses the health concerns of every Maine Coon owner, including a special section about feline eye problems, with reliable advice about safety in the home, selecting a veterinary surgeon, coat problems and effective parasite control. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Maine Coon cat. Topics discussed include: History of the Maine Coon Cat; A portrait of the Maine Coon Cat; Purchasing a Maine Coon Cat; Providing a safe home for your Maine Coon Cat; Feeding your Maine Coon Cat; Grooming your Maine Coon Cat; Training and behaviour of your Maine Coon Cat; Breeding your Maine Coon Cat; Exhibiting your Maine Coon Cat; Health care of your Maine Coon Cat.

At the turn of the 19th century, the Maine Coon was a hardy cat much valued as an efficient exterminator of rodents. The cat fancy as we know it had yet to begin, and Maine was still awaiting American statehood. The majority of these cats were working mousers and pets in coastal ports, villages and the nearby surrounding farming communities. For cats and humans to survive the freezing snows, winds and rains of the Maine winters, they needed to be very tough. This said, it should not be thought the average Coon Cat, as these felines were then known, was left to fend for itself unduly. History indicates that Coon Cats were probably given greater care than was afforded to most other cats of the day. In its earliest years of development, when its numbers were small, it was a valuable feline. Once its type was plentiful, its toughness and character were really shaped. For many individuals, survival of the fittest became the name of the game.

I was well-disposed to this book (well it does have a cat I bred as the main front cover photo!), and hoped it was, at last, a book for UK owners and breeders of the magnificent Maine Coon. I really liked the profusion of colour photographs, the clear layout, and the sensible advice on kitten buying and becoming a breeder.
I was less happy at the lack of attention in the text to a British market and Maine Coon specifics. Very few UK Vets are prepared to spay/neuter kittens at eight weeks old or vaccinate at 6 weeks, we don't have mosquitoes producing Heartworms, and Maine Coons take 4 - 5 years to mature (not 2 - 3 years as the text claims). The advice on bathing your cat doesn't address the special coat of the Maine Coon, and a health section that fails to mention HCM or Hip Dysplasia is a glaring omission. The book ignores the FIFe standards and has only a passing reference to their British member (The Cat Association of Britain) - where the book's author may like to know that UK cats have won International Champion titles (and higher) for several years.
It is isn't a case of splitting hairs, this book is a few whiskers short of a full set !
