For three decades, vocalist Angie Stone has been surprising audiences, critics, peers and the music industry itself. Born and raised in the Southern gospel tradition - while at the same time absorbing the gritty and impassioned anthems generated by soul icons of the 1960s - Stone has since mapped a life-long journey that encompasses rap, neo-soul, hip-hop, R&B, jazz and more. 5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Mahogany Soul 19 Dec 2003
Format:Audio CD
Despite some bad reviews, I would be hard pressed to pick out a bad track on this album. Every song has the power to draw you in, and 'The Heat' only goes further to demonstrate how you can be simple and deep at the same time. This album really means something. You just need to want to hear it!
you could pull each track apart and reveal diamonds of instrumentals, and pearls of wisdom from Angie's lyrics. Spend a quiet moment alone with this album, and when you realise its brilliance share it with a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 + stars for this amazing album 12 Jan 2002
Format:Audio CD
There are a lot of 'nu-soul' artists out there are the moment. I thought Maxwell was the best of the bunch, boy was I wrong!! Angie stone is in a different league. As far as soul artist go, the top 10 list will now read, marvin, Al, Aretha, Angie.
I heard of her when her last album came out and was not really tempted to buy it, with this album I heard someone humming 'more than a woman' and immediately went out and bought a copy of the album.
If you only buy one soul album this year, make it this one, no, make that if you only buy one album- no matter what genre- with year or the next, make it this one.
Her voice is refreshing, none of that vocal showiness that we get with Mariah and the like. Angie's voice is pure silk you believe very word she is singing.
And as for the song writing, I was blown away. There is an honesty there that, makes you let go of your cynicism sing your heart out, no matter how bad you r voice is or what you happen to be when you hear her music.
I cannot recommend this album enough. Buy, buy, buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The voice!!! 16 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
The 2nd Angie Stone Album is a laid-back deep funky soul trip. Her voice is one of the finest on the planet today, and mixed with the urban soul create one of the most amazingly rich albums of the past few years

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple excellence! 20 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
It's gritty, it's sexy, it's soulful, it's mature - it's Music at it's best. There can be no comparison to India or Eryka to me they are not yet in Ms Stone's league. This lady has a huge history in music and this album proves it.
Whether you are an avid soul fan or not you will find something on here to suit your taste. What can I say when even the interlude - The Makings of You - from the master himself [Mr Mayfield] is reproduced with love and an obvious respect.
I have many favorites on here, Brotha, Mad Issues, the beautifully crafted Snowflakes and 20 Dollars.
Music at it's best, I haven't stopped playing it yet and maybe I never will!! Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

Stone even though not as wel known as the new idia arie and erika badu still show that she still has what it takes to stun audiences with her majestic lyrics and soothing vocals. Unlike her last album black diamoind this album compiles a more wide and more versitile range of music of a higher quality.
Overall she is one of the best singers in her genre buy it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul at its best 24 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I love this album, it's so much deeper and not as light as other RnB and neo soul about now. it's chilled and not really a party album, part from the remix of brotha which is lively. A must have for anyone looking for somethin a bit deeper than the pop crap which is around now. If you like this then i'd recommend India. Arie, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys & Jaheim.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Soul Album of 2001 15 Feb 2002
Format:Audio CD
Well, it's a hard one to call because India.Arie's 'Acoustic Soul' is pretty much on a par with Angie Stone's 'Mahogany Soul'. Both albums have 'soul' in the title and both albums have 'soul' in the heart of them.
The beginning of the album tells us exactly what the lady is trying to say: 'If you actin' nonchalant lookin' out the window like
You ain't really feelin' this, it might be you
And if you sittin' still because you're a little bit nervous cuz you really don't know what I'm getting ready to come with, It's you
Oh but ones that are bobbin' their heads up and down and feeling this cuz it's all that,
I represent you, aight? - This album is for people that like pure soul - and if you don't then tough!
Angie never oversings, but never shows a lack of effort in the execution of her songs. There are adequate tempo and style changes to keep the listener interested. The themes of this album are more daring than her last.
Angie asks all Romeo and Juliets everywhere 'What U Dyin For' in the powerful song of the same name; she proclaims the worth of all black men in 'Brotha' ('You got your Wall Street brotha,
your blue collar brotha, your down-for-whatever-chillin'-on-the-corner brotha, your talented brotha, and to everyone of ya'll behind bars ya know that Angie loves ya')
But the real standout tracks are where Angie really mixes anger and hurt in the brilliant 'Pissed Off' and the subtley beautiful 'Wish I Didn't Miss You'. The heartache is powerful... 'One of these days it's gonna happen to you, missing a love like I'm missing you, one of these days when your dreams come true, that's the one that's gonna do it to you'...
Angie mixes the music with guest appearances from Calvin, Musiq Soulchild, Eve and Alicia Keys to really give you something to chew on.
A fantastic album through and through.
