After some shaky EuroArts releases, it was reassuring to read reviews commending this disk. The picture quality on the DVD was probably the worst of the cycle, so it is wonderful to see it here so much improved. The 5.1 audio is also excellent with proper depth. If you're looking for a performance of Mahler 5, I suggest you won't find one better. The combination of Abbado, Lucerne and Mahler is one we are fortunate to enjoy.
However, for me, this is a disappointing release. The feature that made the DVD so cherished was the Conductor Camera - the ability to watch Abbado throughout the Symphony. Seeing it made me realise just how many wonderful Abbado moments you miss when enjoying the views of the musicians; it was quite a revelation. It is not preserved here. The recent Accentus Mahler 9 release (
Mahler: Symphony No. 9 [Blu-ray] [2011] shows that it's possible on Blu-ray, so I'm afraid I simply find fault with EuroArts for taking the easy route, not making the effort to produce the disk they could have, and not, as the other releases have been, an HD version of the previous DVD release.
The performance is without fault. The release, bar the above, is excellent and deserves 5*s. But it could have been even better.
