Klemperer proves his excellent reputation as a mahler conductor here in this magnificant recording of Mahler's 2nd.
The first movement shows Klemperer's brilliant ability to create great tension in music. Here, the highly dramatic and tense movement is perfectly portrayed. It is dark and thrilling, especially at the end as the whole orchestra thunders down the scale!
The second and third movemente are brilliant. Then comes the absolutely beautiful 4th movement. You can't help but be moved by the song 'Urlicht', sung here by an excellent Baker.
The final movement in which Judgement Day is stunningly depicted is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. The great drama is brilliantly handled by Klemperer. Out of the total ruin and devastation comes one of the truly greatest moments in music. The quiet entry of the choir which then combines with the orchestra in a huge climax to bring about one of the most magnificent endings to a musical work ever. The ending is truly breathtaking!
I urge you to buy this recording. Klemperer is one of the all time great Mahler conductors and here he handles one of the greatest symphonies with utter perfection. The best there is on disc!
