I am a great fan of the Mahler Symphonies Sir Georg Solti recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the 1970/80's for Decca. But I also am a fan of the Mahler Symphonies Claudio Abbado recorded with the CSO in the 1980's for DG. Unlike Sir Georg he didn't record all of them, only numbers 1,2,4,5,6 and 7,which of course is on this CD. It's a great recording of it and in my opinion is better than Sir Georg's Decca version, benefiting from a more open spacious sound from DG.
The opening Adagio has dazzling playing from the CSO, with a strong horn solo and woodwind playing backed by atmospheric strings. The inner movements are all fine but the first Nachtmusik is especially beautiful and lyrical, with powerful and rich strings and again some stunning brass playing, particularly from the horns and trumpets.
In the Rondo-Finale all the CSO sections including the percussion (with bells) are on top form, leading to a powerful climax.
