These performances are truly great and surprisingly well recorded too. Walter has masterful way to create maximum drama and profundity in the 2nd symphony without making much fuss, letting the music flow naturally and speak for itself. The final apotheosis is very powerful and awe-inspiring without resorting to Bersteinesque exaggeration. The first symphony is equally impressive, beautifully crafted and lavishing in orchestral colour. Definitely a must-buy for anyone after fine performances of the two symphonies.

The performances here are exemplary but offered in very early stereo.
In recompense you get an interpreter of rare genius who worked with Mahler and understands/understood his requirements. Walter's Song of the Earth from this period (sung by Mildred Miller) has the best playing of the orchestral parts ever commited to disc. These performances are scarcely less distinguished.
The 2nd Symphony times out at a few seconds under 80 minutes and any coupling of these symphonies should have the Gesellen song cycle as a fill up for the 1st Symphony.
I have found it convenient to copy my discs on to recordable CDs to recover the full experience without side breaks. But if you have a continuous player that holds 2 or more discs then this is an experience and a purchase that you will never regret. Otherwise you get up and change the disc. The first time I bought these recordings I had to do that three times with the LP coupling of the Resurrection covering 4 sides. Did I mind about that with vinyl in the 1960s?
Answer - NO!

Many articles and reviews that I have read over the years have lauded this CD and now you can obtain Walter's Mahler 1 & 2 at budget price remastered in excellent early stereo.

Experts elsewhere are better qualified than me to comment as to why these performances are soo good in comparison with so many others on the market; all I can say is that these are magical recordings conducted by Walter who, of course, knew Mahler and worked with him towards the end of the composers life. This fact does not necessarily mean that the performances are authoratitive (there are many other great Mahler 1 and 2 recordings) but there is an inevitable knowledge about Mahler's intentions, I guess.

Mahler 2 ("Resurrection") is split over the two discs but this is of no importance and you also get Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen sung by Mildred Miller too.

An excellent purchase of this monumental music to go with others like Klemperer, for example.
