This performance and recording is outstanding. Let all of us music lovers be reminded that we are listening to music more often than not in our listening rooms. Here, we have a performance, ("Live by the way, but you would never know it") so controlled and so refined that I find myself intensely imagining that I am in the hall at this recording. It is so appealing that the orchestra sounds like a chamber ensemble at times and this is a positive and unique attribute, never heard on any other recording of this symphony.
Maestro Caetani likens Mahler`s explicit performing instructions to having a conducting lesson with the composer, yet he is not averse to taking liberties in order to point up climactic moments, most of which come off better than any other reading.
Well worth buying and having this definitive performance/ recording in your repertoire.
Highly Recommended
By the way,Arts Music/ Oleg Caetani are in the process of releasing all of Shostakovich`s symphonies, all recorded using 24bit/ 96khz technology.
