Every once in a while in life, you stumble upon something that grabs you, shakes you, touches you deep inside. And even in the moment, before it can fully sink in, you realize you have found that rarest of commodities in this airbrushed world of fakery and frauds: authenticity.

It was the summer of 2007 when I experienced just such an epiphany while browsing through one of those slightly ... Read more in Amazon's The Avett Brothers Store

This new Avett Brothers album "Magpie and Dandelion" was created out of the same sessions which produced their last album "The Carpenter" in 2012. As such it continues the North Carolina's bands ongoing relationship with the producing skills of Rick Rubin who has spent his time behind the control desk with the band polishing away some of their rougher edges. There are pluses and minuses to this approach not least that the brothers records now bear very little relationship to their raucous stage act where they just about blow all comers off stage. Is this new record therefore the hangover sessions from the last record? The answer is that it is more like a part 2 continuation as it is packed with some great songs that highlights the bands reflective tendencies and love of barroom ballads. Let us start first however with the poptastic single "Another is waiting" which is two minutes plus of pounding hoedown that is packed with vibrant energy. That same vibrancy is missing from other parts of the album and perhaps Rubin's shaving of the bands raw energy really needs to be reconsidered on the next record. This is complaint is tempered nonetheless by the presence on this album of some lovely songs including the beautifully sweet "Bring your love to me", the big album ballad "Morning Song" with its splendid call and response chant plus the tender live version of "Souls like a wheel" reviving an earlier song. Granted a song like "Good to you" does bear a intimate relationship to the melody of the Beatles "Norwegian Wood" but they pull it off all the same. If the album has some issues then it comes in terms of the tracks which bookend it. The track which commences the album "Open Ended Life" perhaps lyrically overplays that hardly perennial theme of country bands namely "the freedom of the open road".Read more ›

Got to be five stars for this album, It doesn't disappoint at all. I was introduced to this band by a colleague at work & I can't thank her enough. if you know them & haven't got this, grab it now & if you don't know them, well, introduce yourself to them with Magpie & the Dandelion, & like me, you may find it hard to put down.
