All 22 episodes from the third series about Vietnam veteran turned private investigator Thomas Magnum, played by Tom Selleck. In this series, Magnum is told by an old comrade that a sadistic Russian officer who tortured them in Vietnam is back for revenge, Higgins (John Hillerman) is in danger from some former Mau Mau soldiers from his army days in Kenya, and Magnum has to help a doctor accused of killing three of her patients. Episodes are: 'Did You See the Sunrise? (Part 1)'; 'Did You See the Sunrise? (Part 2)'; 'Ki'is Don't Lie'; 'The Eighth Part of the Village'; 'Past Tense'; 'Black on White'; 'Flashback'; 'Foiled Again'; 'Mr White Death'; 'Mixed Doubles'; 'Almost Home'; 'Heal Thyself'; 'Of Sound Mind'; 'The Arrow That is Not Aimed'; 'Basket Case'; 'Birdman of Budapest'; 'I Do?'; 'Forty Years From Sand Island'; 'Legacy From a Friend'; 'Two Birds of a Feather'; '...By Its Cover'; 'The Big Blow'; and 'Faith and Begorrah'.
Hawaiian-set detective program Magnum P.I. was a huge hit during the 1980s, finishing in the top 20 shows during the first five seasons it aired. Tom Selleck, who won an Emmy in 1984 for his performance, plays Thomas Magnum, a Vietnam Vet who retires from the military and moves to the Pacific islands to start a private detective agency. His allies include a couple of army buddies who also live on the islands, and proper former British army officer Jonathan Higgins, caretaker of the mansion where Magnum stays and foil to Magnum's fun-loving ways.

In this purchase I've bought series 2 and 3.
Series 2, like series 1 is in the larger box that contains the clear plastic disc holders like a book. Series 3, like the newer series (and A-Team series 2 to 5) is in a smaller box containing slim line DVD cases holding 2 DVDs per case and the slim line dvd cases are held in a cardboard box.
Unlike the other reviewer my discs weren't two sided. They were single sided with the nice images on the top. The over all quality of the episodes aren't too bad. I felt the intros were a higher quality than series 2. There a few episodes that had a lower quality. Stuff like the 3rd episode having black line down the right side of the screen. It's a few pixels from the absolute edge so it is unfortunately more noticeable than I'd like but not a huge problem. Universal definitely could have done better.
Still this is a must for fans and the set was very enjoyable.
As Thomas Magnum, Tom Selleck plays it very much in the manner of James Garner's Jim Rockford. He's a little world weary, often on the receiving end and-here through voice over pearls of wisdom-quite philosophical about the follies and predicaments human nature is all too often prone to getting itself in to. To his credit, though, Tom Selleck gives the character of Magnum sufficient individuality and credibility to eclipse any thoughts of Jim Rockford.
As alluded to above, one of the joys of going back and watching shows like this is that you get your monies worth in terms of the production values embodied in the show. So many shows like this from the 1970s and 1980s were filmed-with each episode produced like a short movie- and the makers took great pride in setting the drama in real locations. They made every effort to let the audience know that the unfolding drama, fictional though it may have been, was taking place in the tangible world known to them-real streets, landscapes, buildings and highways enveloped in the sun, wind and rain of the ever changing weather. Possibly the best example of this is another somewhat earlier show from the 1970s, 'The Streets Of San Francisco', but 'Magnum PI', like its obvious antecedents, 'Hawaii Five-O' and 'The Rockford Files', is up there alongside it in terms of high quality, filmed on location, production values.Read more ›
as another reviewer says, universal changed the design of the boxes from proper cases to slimline, and for some reason they changed the box colour on this....
the fonts of series 1 and 2 do not match either, so its a bit odd, what were they thinking.....
i have reviewed it 5 stars as the packaging is crap but obviously the content is good, and cannot really be faulted, just sucks if you want to collect the whole thing.
exotic islands of Hawaii with a strong cast who all gell together very well.
At approx 45 miniutes long each episode is just the right lengh of time
and not too drawn out.Well worth watching again and again.
The best episodes for me was 'The Big Blow' and 'I DO?' both were very funny.
You get six discs in one DVD case, soundtrack is in 2.0 mono, screen is in 1.33:1
