5.0 out of 5 stars Magnum Opus 26 Dec 2008
Format:Hardcover
A beautifully crafted work, presenting key works from the Magnum members in a simple, classic style. The variety of the subjects and the quality of their representation allows the reader/viewer to immerse themselves into a variety of situations and draw their own conclusions and feelings.
Highly recommended.

An introduction to the inspirational world of the Magnum Photographic Agency - a collection of images from the some of the world's most talented photojournalists throughout history. Superb quality printing coupled with informative text.

The only down side is that it will make your own photography look rubbish by comparison!

5.0 out of 5 stars The True Professionals 16 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
Anyone who has an interest in photography will probably have heard of Magnum. This book captures the essence of (probably) the world's best photo-journalism organisations. It is filled with images - many of which I'd forgotten - that will make you catch your breath.

This is the paperback version of Magnum Magnum which is identical in every way (apart from weight and size) of the hardback version - same pictures, same presentation. The difference is that the paperback version can be read on your lap without its weight cutting off the circulation to your feet !

Great book, fantastic pictures, constant source of inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars I just adore this book 17 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
I'll keep this simple. Basically this is one of my absolute favourite books. The quality of the book itself is fantastic, the images inside the book are top notch and its quite hefty so it will impress friends and family when they visit your house lol. But seriously its a fantastic book that will not dissapoint one bit. But be warned, as with this type of photography there is a little nudity. Tastefully done ofcourse

Now wheres my application form to join the agency....

The title of this book may be missing one word, and that is 'Opus' as it truly is a Magnum Opus. At over 600 pages, there is an essay on the work of many, if most, of those photographers who worked for Magnum since its creation about 70 years ago.

All of the imagery is of high quality although not all need have been previously published. Some, I have seen elsewhere and quite recently although the majority is either new to me or only slightly familiar.

Although not in any way a history of photography, and probably never intended to be one, it is something of a history of Magnum although this represents a very small percentage of the images under their control. This book may be very closely compared with The Great LIFE Photographers as several of the same photographers, and some of the images, appear in both and Life magazine used Magnum's photographers by choice.

The style of photography is very much of the 'News' or 'Photo-Journalism' styles and some of it moves slightly to one side towards pictorialism or some other category. That makes for a good variety. Each 'article' includes a biography of the photographer or some other relevant data, all of which makes for not just a collection of historical images but something significantly greater.

An important addition to any photographer's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Photojournalism Collection 12 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
A superb collection from the Magnum agency spanning the 1940s to present day. Each section has a short bio of the photographer and a short descrption by another Magnum photographer, in some cases introducing a personal selection of pictures. The photographs are beautifully reproduced and in many cases include less obvious examples e.g. Robert Capa's Spanish Civil War photos ( and not THAT one) and Cartier-Bresson's are from India.
All-in-all a great read over 500+ pages which provides both a collection in it's own right and a useful sampler for some lesser-known photographers' work. Highly recommended.
