My favorite cuts on this CD are 1 ("Lost Landing"), 3, 5, ("A Moment's Seam"), and 8 ("Loom"), especially 3, ("Learning Forgetfullness"). Terrific at creating soundscapes here that are at times both top-and-bottom-heavy (massive depth within the bassline and percussion mated with phased, expansive, and occasionally searing, pitch-bent guitar) at once, these shorter songs manage to suspend time with much more conviction than the much lengthier, lyricless, jam-oriented cuts. Those tracks include 2 ("Relay), 4 ("Shapeshifter"), and 7 ("Frame of Reference"), although 6, ("Borne Upon Waves") goes further than the others in achieving that effect by cycling through a more intricate motif. At times it seems the lengthier material might have benefited from some editing, but enough wrinkles are revealed within each of the longer cuts to keep them from plumbing any sort of real monotony. Definitely a CD that demands and rewards active listening while also revealing nuggets of gorgeous, heavily-modulated guitar driven hook-laden tunes.
