In "Simply Amazing Spiral Quilts", author RaNae Merrill explored creating simple spirals. With "Magnificent Spiral Mandala Quilts", she explores the traditional Mandala. The 'Mandala' (meaning 'universe' or 'wholeness') quilt is defined as a traditional pieced quilt, built around a common centre point, utilising 'wedges' to create movement within the centre. It is repetitive in its wedge design and valued for its continuity and symmetry - sometimes utilizing reflective design.
About the Author
RaNae Merril found her calling as a professional quilter after previous careers as a pianist, a photographer and a travel writer. These days she satisfies her wanderlust by traveling to quilt shows and guilds as a teacher and lecturer. She has designed fabrics for Blank Quilting and has published patterns in a variety of quilt magazines.

i find this book truly facinating and absolutely amazing it needs to be studied quite a lot to get the idea of how things work to achieve the pattern of the quilt but such things of beauty as these quilts are gives you such a feeling of achievment and i never get tired of looking at them glad i obtained the book and i am doing one for my daughter in the usa when i get over there glen pugh

Excelent Book. Very informative. Take each page ,and follow instructions ,and it will become clear! Demonstration will help on 'the Quilt Show',where the author goes into great practical demo. Great show for quilters !!!

My own private teacher

I was immediately drawn to the beauty of the cover quilt on this book, but hesitant to pick it up because it looked too difficult. But I was quickly reassured upon reading the pages, detailed with beautiful photographs and illustrations, and I knew I could accomplish the quilts in this book - and design my own! The step-by-step instructions are so well written it's like having a one-on-one class with the teacher. RaNae Merrill has created a masterpiece and it continues on with the attached CD, which includes all the templates and pattern pieces for the book projects and more than a dozen wedge spiral designs to use in your own creation. If paper-piecing is your game, or if you want to learn how to paper piece - the easy way- this is the book for you. It may take me a while to get the quilt projects in the book made, but that's because I am having too much fun designing my own.

I pre-ordered the book a while ago, because of its lovely cover, and when I received it I was not disappointed. The book describes how to make beautiful spiral-mandala paper-pieced quilts, that look very complex, but are quite easy to make.
It has 3 parts - design, sewing and projects. Each section contains very clear, easy to follow explanations and tips, and is accompanied by many illustration. The CD that comes with the book contains much information too, including detailed information for Electric Quilt users, and templates that will make your drafting easier The projects are beautiful and unique, and I will probably try to make one of them soon. If you like paper piecing - you will love the book.

This book is definitely magnificent, from the detailed instructions, to the illustrations, to the varied projects. If you like to paper piece and learn to create your own mandala quilt, this is certainly the book for you.
