Most Helpful Customer Reviews

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful By Warwick J. Carter on 30 April 2012
Format: Paperback
I love maps, old and new, but this book is the most disappointing map book of the over 200 I own. The commentary about the maps is very detailed, but the reproductions of the maps (the most important part) is hopeless. Huge maps are reproduced at tiny scales so nothing of the text on the map or any geographical feature can be discerned. Some maps have a detailed extract but even these are often too small in scale to be read.
The map captions give the official title of the map (often in Latin or other non-English language) and dimensions, but not what the map is of, and it is sometimes impossible to determine what the map depicts without significant reading of the text.
This book would be superb if published in a format twice the size with the map taking up the whole page and text on following pages (ie. as in Taschen's Atlas Major), and larger maps published in sections that were at the same scale as the original with a key map to guide the reader.
As it is, it is useless.

What a great book even has a vintage map hidden away inside the dust jacket

It is one of those books I will treasure always. The illustrations are beautiful. Maps from across the world and across history. A book full of historical information. Wonderful!
