By D. J. H. Thorn TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The second and final Vapors album bombed in the face of critical dismissal and public indifference. Perhaps that isn't surprising given that it was a powerpop guitar album made just the wrong side of the shift towards all things synthesiser. It's rather heavier on the growling bass than on the guitar, but a fine album nevertheless. Beaty and melodic throughout, the only wobble occurs in occasionally suspect lyrics. "Civic Hall" suffers from this, not helped by the awkward attempt at a reggae-based rhythm. Even so, it isn't a total disaster.

The first three tracks are all winners, catchy, uptempo songs led by the stand-out single, "Jimmie Jones". Towards the end of the album, The Vapors keep things interesting with some marginally more ambitious songs. "Can't Talk Anymore" makes good use of a bass/acoustic guitar combination as well as repetitive call and response vocals; "Silver Machines" features an effective tempo change; "Magnets", by comparison with the rest of the songs, an epic, builds gradually to a climax and is an impressive achievement. There isn't much in the way of bonuses, but "Galleries For Guns" is a major asset on this disc.

The Vapors may have trailed four years late in the wake of sharper commentators such as Elvis Costello, but "Magnets" is an enjoyable and rewarding album which deserves more attention.

A Forgotten Classic 10 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD
The Vapors will always be remembered for the wonderfully bizarre "Turning Japanese" from the "New Clear Days" album. However, this, their second album is an absolute classic of the New Wave era and is deserving of your time and money. Full of sharp angular riffs, dark and paranoid lyrics of angst, seperation and alienation and a fine ear for melody. Standout track for me is the original album closer, the anthemic title track. With a lyric based on the assassination of JFK, the song builds to a fantastic climax "Theres a man with a message and its written on lead, theres a man who was God, but God is dead".
An album to hold up against all the great english pop/rock acts. Any fan of New Wave, XTC or thge current american pop/punk acts like green day should pick this gem up.

Best album of 1981 6 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
This album, like the first, showed what a great band the Vapors were and makes you wonder what might have come next if internal arguments had not led to them breaking up after the release of this album.

There problem seemed to be poor choice of singles. Although I quite like Jimmy Jones (which almost got them back into the UK top-forty), Daylight Titans / Spiders was a very poor choice. The classic tracks on this album, which all could have been hit singles, are:

Live at the marquee (10/10) - a real sing-a-long rocker with great guitar solos.

Johnny's in love again (9/10) - great guitar and lyrics.

Can't talk anymore (9/10) - "someone's in the bathroom when I want to use the bog, someones on the phone with a message for my dog" - great lyrics!

Isolated case (8/10) - another soft-rock gem

Jimmie Jones (8/10) - slightly dark lyrics, but a great song.

Forget the rest, its an essential buy just for the above 5 tracks.

After listening to this, go and get "Best of The Vapors", which includes the first album plus the b-sides and listen to:

America (9/10) - short rocker

Prisoners (9/10) - first single - closest to punk they ever got

Spring collection (9/10) - mild rock anthem

Somehow (9/10) - great guitar

Here comes the judge (9/10) - although a live b-side, this song really rocks and interesting subject matter

Wasted (8/10) - another great b-side

Turning Japanese (8/10) - the smash hit single (#1 in Australia)

In fact, most of the first album was very good. Problem was, their choice of singles was poor, resulting in only one top-forty hit. The worst song on the "New Clear Days" album, News At Ten, was released as the follow-up to Turning Japanese.

The Vapors were seriously talented, this is a great album (as was the first album) and it is a must own for any new-wave / rock fan.
