Well, I was blown away by this torch. To quote Maglites' motto - this is the definitive 'work of art that REALLY works'. Anyone would love this piece of kit, but particularly backpackers/climbers/campers. At just under 5" long, it fits nicely in the palm of the hand. The performance, for something so small, powered by just 3 AAA batteries, is amazing. It's blindingly bright thanks to its 83 lumens LED unit. In fact, I also own a 4D cell LED mag, and I rate the XL higher! Not only does it have a good distance, but you also get a decent spread of light too.
Right - lets get to the modes. There are 5 different settings that you can use - dim, strobe, nitelite, signal & SOS. To access each different mode, you simply hold that particular symbol uppermost, then, by pressing and holding the button in for a couple of seconds, the mode is activated. It really is simple. DIM - press & hold button then rotate torch to dim the light - ideal to preserve battery life. STROBE - press & hold and you get the strobe effect. NITELITE - press & hold until the beam flashes once. If the torch is put down, the light will now dim. As soon as you move the torch, normal brighness returns. SIGNAL - press & hold until the light goes out. When the torch is rotated either way, the beam comes back. SOS - press & hold until SOS is activated. It will continue to flash 3 long 3 short until you deactivate. This could be a life saver if you're stuck injured up a mountain, etc. You do, of course have just the normal setting where you switch it on and simply get a good continuous beam of light. It is waterproof, I believe, up to a depth of 1m. Battery life, Mag claim, is 5hrs 15 mins normal, and a whopping 201 hrs on low. So ladies, if you're stuck what to buy your fella for Christmas / birthday, get him one of these. He'll love it. It may sound expensive at 40 odd pounds, but for the workmanship and engineering, I think its well worth it. You can buy even cheaper direct from the States. And no, I don't work for Maglite. I just appreciate quality kit.
