Back in 1991, I bought my first Maglite AA Incandescent. And I remember being so utterly blown away by it. Robust constuction, Twist switch and flood to a spot by turning the head, great beam out of all proportion to its size, candle mode utilised by unscrewing the head and placing the base of the unit in the upturned head. OK so the beam was uneven and a warm Orange tint but at the time it was the best going for a torch of its size.
But over 20 years later things are different.
A technology utilising LED's or Light Emitting Diodes has entered the fray.
Once upon a time LED technology in torches was reserved for the tip-top end of the market but it has several advantages of equivalent incandescent units:
1) Much greater brightness than an equivalent sized Incandescent unit.
2) Greater reliabilty, duration, and sturdiness.
3) A fraction of the power consumption of the equivalent Incandescent unit.
Like everything else, LED technology started out expensive but has become reliably mass produced. It has percolated down into the likes of the Maglite LED AA designs.
So does the standard Incandescent Maglite Mini Maglite AA still have any use?
Well the classic virtues are all still there.
And in fairness to Maglite, the cost has still remained the same since 1991. This is in real terms a price drop.
But sadly the beam produced-deep Orange, poor throw in modern terms and riddled with artifacts (unavoidable in a torch of this class back in 1991)such as black spots and a comma-shaped spot-no longer cuts it.
There are lots of alternatives such as those made by the Chinese like Fenix, Jetbeam, O Light etc utilising LED's which are so much better.
But the real killer blow comes form Maglites own updated AA LED range.
A Mini Maglite Pro or Pro+ (sadly only available in the States at present...!) delivers all those traditional benefits with a piercing white beam over 10 times brighter, with much better throw, utilising the very best in LED technology.
And besides it the beam produced by the regular Incandescent AA version is so dim and uneven, it needs to be retired.
However, anybody who already owns an Incandescent version need not despair.
TerraLUX make an outstanding LED Drop-in module which gets you within 85% of the best anybody has to offer.
This torch may be worth considering for non-critical applications but for anything important spend a bit extra and go for one of Maglites own LED versions.
I give it three stars because it still has almost all the outstanding attributes it had in 1991.
And the real cost has dropped in that time as well.
But IMHO, the beam no longer cuts it.
For those owning this AA Incandescent there is new life available in the form of TerraLUX.
But new purchasers are no longer getting the best beam out there.
Sadly, it is totally circumvented by the march of technology.
And LED competitors in this capacity have it licked!
