MEP2004 is fantastic... I've been using it for a month on projects up to 2 hours in length, and all without a glitch. MEP2004 is also faster and easier to use than the over-rated Adobe Premiere, and is £260 cheaper.
You can edit in 16 audio/video tracks, overlaying text, graphics or use blue/green screen technology. You can also do split screen, alpha channel effects and many sound effects e.g. reverb, compression, crossfading. It also renders in real-time, meaning that you don't have to wait for your video to render to be able to see your work in progress. Another great feature is the upgraded DVD and VCD authoring options, allowing you to have an intro to your DVD before the menu, and to have improved menus with sound and video in the background and on the butttons.
This software is sold as home software, but it really is up to the same standards as professional editing software like Premiere. For this reason, the interface can be a little confusing for first time users of non-linear editing software, but for advanced users this is fantastic value for money.
Also, be sure to configure all of the settings correctly before beginning a project, i.e. set MEP2004 to PAL, not NTSC, and make sure that the audio sampling frequency is 48000 and not 41000.
You need a very capable PC to run MEP2004 (I'm using a 2.6 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM) and a large hard drive (at 7200 rpm if possible) as video capture can often produce file sizes in excess of 5GB.
Overall, an excellent piece of software if you've used similar software before, and incredible value for money.

I needed software to do some initialy fairly simple video work - but with the potential to do more complicated work when necessary.I had spent weeks trying to get my old software to capture without dropping frames with no success This works brilliantly - within a couple of hours my footage was playing on the dvd player! Installation was straightforward and the tutorials were easy to follow and got me started immediatly. The help files are easy to access and there seems to be the facility to do some really sophisticated stuff - great value

Finding software to edit Mpeg 4 files can be tricky, but this does it fine.
I bought MMEP2004 to use with a Pentax Optio MX mpeg-4 camcorder/camera. The Pentax was bundled with some of the worst software I've ever seen. MMEP2004 is a world apart from that. It is excellent. Within a couple of minutes I was able to import a film and modify the soundtrack (which I had inadvertently muffled over with my fingers when recording) so you could hear it again, and even pick out a train passing in the distance. It was bizarrely like one of those kidnap thrillers where the police manage to extract previously undetectable evidence in a suspiciously easy way.
There may well be packages which offer more or better transitions and special effects, but this is such good value and so nice to use. Unlike many of the lower-end movie editing offerings it's not all irritating, rubbishy wizards. Instead it treats you as though you might not be an idiot after all and allows you to poke around and discover things, try things out and just have fun!
As well as editing, it even includes a feature to allow you to create and record (don't need nero) CDs or DVDs along with the ability to create menu screens, scene selections, backgrounds, animated buttons etc. I had thought I was going to buy software to do all that separately, but it really wont be worth it.
For linux nuts it also includes a Ogg Vorbis player. There are parts of the resource cd which are a bit thin, and you'll only be able to use the pictures on screen, but they are pretty good quality pictures and you'll be glad you have them, so long as you bear in mind you haven't paid extra for them. So there you are - something for everyone, even tightwads!

I was using Adobe Premiere Pro before I decided to give Magix a whirl. Obviously Premier is very good, but for my purposes (and most others probably) this software is more than adequate. I honestly didn't expect the amount of features included with this software, I bought it expecting a catch.
There are two catches as far as I can see:
1. The manual definitely isn't the best.
2. The Burning section isn't as in depth as I'd like
But, 1. The software is very easy to pick up and the magix website forum is always welcoming to those with questions and 2. As far as I can see, to get more in depth burning options you need Adobe Encore (£382.99 from Amazon and difficult to learn from scratch).
The software offers bundled sound effects and music as well as an 'ambient sound generator' which makes customisable weather noises (fantastic when you realise the lens cap has been hitting the on camera microphone). It also has a large stock of sound/visual cleanup options and visual effects (as well as surround sound set-up). Green screen and keying features are included which work well (although DV resolution is too low for it to work perfectly, not Magix fault though) and are excellent for super-imposing muzzle flash on toy guns. This software allows accurate editing which is very easy to pick up. I've had no trouble ripping, editing or burning to any of the large amount of formats available. The only negative feature is the poor keyframing, but I'm impressed that keyframing is in non-linear editing soft-ware at this price at all and with a bit of patience you tend to get what you want.
