5.0 out of 5 stars At last! I've found the perfect coffee maker!, 27 Nov 2005
If, like me, you love coffee and want top quality espresso, cappuccino and latte on tap, with no mess or hassle, this is the machine for you!

Up until a year ago, I had never owned a coffee maker. They always sounded too complicated and fiddly, and I knew I would end up losing patience and consigning the machine to the back of a cupboard.

With this in mind, my first purchase was a Senseo. This makes ok coffee, but I found it wasn't versatile enough - I wanted to be able to make cappuccinos and lattes. It was at this point I first considered buying a Nespresso machine, but was a little put off by the price. So I went for a Tassimo instead. Big mistake - the quality of the drinks was dreadful. Luckily for me, my Tassimo stopped working after a couple of months, and I put my refund towards the Magimix M200.

I cannot think of a single bad point to this machine, it is fantastic. I was worried it might take me a while to get the hang of frothing milk, but the machine is so easy to use, the very first cup of cappuccino I made was perfect. Simply switch on, fill the water tank, switch to steam function, froth the milk, insert the Nespresso capsule and pour the espresso on top of the frothed milk - takes about two minutes from start to finish, and tastes divine. I have now stopped buying coffee when I am out, because it never tastes anywhere near as good as the coffee I get from my Magimix.

There are plenty of coffee blends to choose from, and unlike the Senseo and Tassimo, where I sometimes had trouble getting hold of the coffee pods, it is easy to order from the Nespresso site and delivery is very quick.

If there is a drawback, it is only that I have an increasing number of visitors who have developed an insatiable thirst for cappuccino - even my sister who used to claim she didn't even like coffee.

When I first bought the machine, I thought I would probably just use it at weekends as a treat, but it's so good, I use it every day, several times a day. All I can say is, if you are thinking about buying one, just do it! Oh, and I really wouldn't bother paying an extra £100 for the automatic version. The manual does everything you will need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fewer hassles, fantastic coffee!, 2 Jan 2004
Nespresso uses a unique technology, and some may be concerned as to the viability of the concept, i.e. how long, and how successful, will Nespresso last? Obviously you will be taking a leap of faith in investing in this technology, but it IS worth it. I have only tried the Magimix M200 (the one I bought) and the Alessi models, but both are great machines. The Alessi is slightly more expensive, obviously paying for better engineering and parts, such as a glass water tank as opposed to the plastic one which the Magimix has. Please don't be fooled, ALL good coffee machines require daily cleaning and care to make them last and perform well. The Nespresso machines are no different, but they are designed to be cleaned and maintained easier.
Coffee quality is fantastic. I have worked in Italy, and this machine (and the Alessi) makes just as good coffee as you get out there. You can place sugar on the crema without it sinking!
Making good coffee from an espresso machine takes practice, and there are no shortcuts, whether it is Nespresso or from a regular machine. This machine will make it easier though, especially straight espresso. Tip - if you like capuccino or latte in a big mug (rather than a wide cuppucino cup), take your favourite mug to a shop and see if it fits under the coffee drip. Otherwise you will have to make the coffee and froth in separate cups and combine.
The Nespresso club (Internet or phone) will allow you to order coffee capsules. The machine comes with a selection, allowing you to buy to your taste. Some may think it expensive at 21pence per capsule, but this is measured properly and there is never any waste or mess. I have no insight into how the coffee is packaged at source, but it tastes superb. There are currently 9 varieties, ranging in strength and flavour.
In my opinion this machine produces high quality coffee every time. It takes about a week (or two) to get used to using any machine. The Nespresso club is simple to use and very reliable. The Nespresso web site is a good place to start for information. I will come back in a year and tell you how well the machine lasts over time. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars convert, 14 Nov 2005

I have bought two of the "proper" machines before. After gunging up my Gaggia's heating block because they didn't emphasise an internal cleaning regime (soft water area) I agonised over whether I wanted to tie myself to a single manufacturer's brand of coffee- as all the pod machines do.

You betcha! This is the best designed macchina I think I've ever come across. I'm glad I paid extra for the flipping jaw design- less fuss than the cheaper ones with the handle + coffee compartment. I've walked past coffee shops in the last week without an expensive longing. It is really simple to use (though I'm sticking to measuring out the water amount with one of my old little coffee glasses). The frother took a bit of experimentation- I like very frothy- and I went back to using a separate metal jug. Make sure it the led changes to orange indicating steam fuction and don't let it overheat and boil-froth over.
Capsules are only available online, but the nespresso site does have - wow- cleaning fluids and screams like mad about a regular cleaning regime.

For newbies- there is too much that goes into trad machines to get a proper coffee - tamping, coffee type, pressure, freshness, cleanliness, bits of coffee grounds you have to bang out of the compartment that go everywhere. You can barely imitate good coffee shops because you need the high pressure of a £500-£700 plumbed in machine so that the coffee isn't bitter.
For anyone else who is used to espresso making- why not spend more time drinking the stuff and relaxing?

December 2007 still going strong. If you get a persistent burnt taste it's because you need to flush the machine with a lot more hot water. It's best to flip the lid to release the small pool of dilute coffee and reflush the machine with at least a cupfull of hot water per session. The most useful tool (as ever) is a ordinary toothbrush to thoroughly clean the indented grid which pierces the bottom of the capsule. Capsules still only appear to be available on line, but the standard delivery is incredibly speedy. The best frothing milk I've found is Cravendale full fat (because of the filtration it lasts all week). This machine has seriously reduced my spending in normal coffee shops.
