Product Description

Product Description
The monk and scholar Roger Bacon claimed to have seen many marvels of nature and science and concealed these in a book written in an unbreakable code. Sir Hugh Corbett has been instructed to organise agents in Paris to steal this Book of Secrets. They do so but pay a violent price and the French King Philip IV now wishes a meeting between the scholars of England and France to discuss breaking the code. Edward I has no choice but to allow the meeting to take place at Corfe Castle, which becomes a place of murder and mayhem. Young women from the castle are being slain whilst horrific things are witnessed in the nearby forest. The situation becomes more serious when two of the French scholars die in sinister circumstances. Corbett and Ranulf-atte-Newgate have to thread this maze of malevolent murder whilst trying to decipher the great secrets of one of England’s most outstanding scholars.

About the Author
Paul Doherty was born in Middlesbrough. He studied History at Liverpool and Oxford Universities and obtained a doctorate for his thesis on Edward II and Queen Isabella. He is now headmaster of a school in north-east London and lives with his family in Essex.

4.0 out of 5 stars a Doherty novel is always a cause for jubilation, 12 Aug 2004

This review is from: The Magician's Death (Paperback)
and the "The Magician's Death" again proves that.

As usual with Doherty' s novel it is written with a great flow, action and description intersect and create a vivid picture of the time and the acting people. Very quickly one get absorbed in the story and just wants to know what is going to happen next. I loath those novel where one has to read at least 100 pages just to get into the story. Paul Doherty spares one this kind of reading experience.

I believe I have read in the meantime all or at least almost all Doherty' s novels featuring Sir Hugh Corbett and his man-servant Ranulf-atte-Newgate. I find it interesting to see how the relationship between these chaps develop over time. For sometime I feel that the relationship is changing and Ranuf becomes more and more prominient. In the "The Magician's Death" this is development is more pronouced than before. I like that because characters develop overtime in real life too. So I wonder when Sir Hugh will retire and become just the guiding spirit for the newly created Sir Ranuf who will to the actual work.... we see what Paul Doherty will have in store for Sir Hugh and Ranuf.

All in all, a great and entertaining story! To be recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars the magicians death by paul doherty, 19 Nov 2005

this is one of the best books so far, i love the way that sir hugh corbett and ranulf are a perfect partnership. sir hugh being polite and observing protocol and ranulf not caring so long as sir hugh is not in danger. this is an excellent read and a must have for any hugh corbett fan. exciting and un-put-downable. will have you wishing you didn't have to go to work. what more can i say other than, when is the next book coming out?

5.0 out of 5 stars Doherty does it again, 23 Jul 2004

This review is from: The Magician's Death (Paperback)
Paul Doherty used to write his novels under so many different names it could become really confusing. Thankfully all that is in the past (pun intended). Here is another book featuring the medieval detective Sir Hugh Corbett, I have lost count of the number of novels he has appeared in, but I can tell you that the standard of those novels never drops. Modern day America and Britain might be easy to write about and easy to relate to, but give yourself a treat travel back in time and enjoy a history lesson and damn good thriller rolled into one. Check out Doherty's other great sleuth Brother Athelstan as well. Doherty has written so many novels that you could probably spend the rest of your live reading them, but, what the hell, I could think of a lot worse thing to do.
