Product Description

In 1964, Ken Kesey, the famed author of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” set off on a legendary, LSD-fuelled cross-country road trip to the New York World’s Fair – a trip made famous in Tom Wolfe’s book “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.” Kesey was joined on his Magic Bus by “The Merry Band of Pranksters,” a renegade group of counterculture truth-seekers that included Neal Cassady, the Beat Generation icon immortalised in Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road.” This trip ignited the beginning of the 1960s psychedelic revolution.

Kesey and the Pranksters intended to make a documentary about their trip, shooting footage on 16MM, but the film was never finished and the footage has remained virtually unseen. With MAGIC TRIP, Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney (Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson) and Alison Ellwood were given unprecedented access to this raw footage by the Kesey family. They restored over 100 hours of film and audiotape, and have shaped an invaluable document of this extraordinary piece of American history.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating! 20 Sep 2011
Format:DVD
I saw this film in the theater and found it to be a fascinating testament to an amazing man and a time in space that is hard to put into perspective. Did the Merry Pranksters change the world? By driving across America, handing out LSD, did they raise the consciousness of a generation? That could be debated, but what cannot is the fantastic footage from that period. Although not a perfect film by any means, it is defitely worth a view.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film. 18 Oct 2011

Saw this in the cinema. I always preffered Ken Casey and the Merry Pranksters to Timothy Leary and his Harvard pals. This film will show you why...they were much more fun.
Although the footage is obviously old the film somehow manages to come across as very current. Very well put together. I would recommend this movie to anyone interested in 'sixties culture'. I don't think handing out free LSD lifted the consciousness of America but the film about it lifted my spirits. Great stuff.Borderline Dreamtime

Format:DVD
Fascinating documentary into a part of Ken Kesey's life and the Merry Pranksters.
Also a good insight on LSD when it first began tests and street use.
