Product Description

Computer-generated update of Serge Danot's classic 1970s children's series. After Dougal (Robbie Williams) accidentally releases the evil Zeebad (Tom Baker) from his prison, he and pals Ermintrude (Joanna Lumley), Brian (Jim Broadbent) and Dylan (Bill Nighy) embark on a quest to find three magic diamonds before Zeebad uses them to encase the world in ice.

From Amazon.co.uk

The Magic Roundabout is another in a long list of 1960’s and 1970’s television shows updated and adapted for the big screen. The original show has since become a cult favourite due to its hallucinatory double-entendres, and the powers that be realised that the fans of the television series now had children of their own. Therefore, the film version of The Magic Roundabout attempts to strike a balance between appealing to both children and their parents. To that end, they’ve recruited a whole host of celebrities to provide voices: Robbie Williams as Dougal the dog, Kylie Minogue as Florence, Tom Baker as the evil Zeebad and Ian McKellen as Zebedee, amongst others. The story involves Dougal accidentally releasing Zeebad from prison, then joining up with his friends to save the day--ideal good-versus-bad kid’s entertainment. The DVD release has two different versions. The single disc version includes character profiles, a quiz and a look at the UK premiere of the film. The two-disc version, meanwhile, also has behind the scenes documentaries and, best of all, some classic black & white episodes of the original series--the perfect piece of nostalgia to entertain the parents. --Ted Kord

This film is fabulous. My 8, 5 and 3 year old love it. It has us dancing around the living room with the wonderful music (and I'm not a Kylie or Robbie fan) and the story really keeps the childrens attention. It's not as entertaining on the level of something like Monsters Inc for the adults but trust me the children will love it.
It was on a loop continuosly for days when we first got it and even now the children watch it and I am dragged around for an obilgatory dance.
Tom Baker is wonderful in it, Robbie isn't bad but Lee Evans is underutilised. The rest of the cast is brilliant too - Bill Nighy etc - real talent.
I was wonderfully surprised by this film. It isn't anything like the cartoon I remember from my childhood but I don't find that a problem.
Well worth buying.

The soundtrack is called 'Doogal' and available on Amazon too.

It's magic you know....

I have seen this film more than once as my son likes it. The first time I sat through it I experienced the intense disappointment felt by some other reviewers that the script was nowhere near as witty and clever as the late Eric Thompson 1970s original. Whilst that can be expected, given that Eric Thompson has sadly passed away, the makers of the UK version of this film could have marshalled a comic writer capable of delivering a more subtle script. Perhaps Nigel Planer (who has written on the classic Magic Roundabout) could have stood up to the plate.

Having said that, once the disappointment passes, this film is surprisingly watchable. Like the original "Manege Enchante", the film is French made and has been rescripted and revoiced for the UK audience. The French origins stand out in its eye for detail and high-standard animation (OK, not quite Pixar). This alone make it worth another viewing. The story and soundtrack however doesn't quite make up its mind about what audience it is addressing: young children, teenage fans of Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue, parents or nostalgics. The result is a film that attempts to please everyone but threatens to enthrall no one. The attempts at humour for adults are not always well judged either ("hot rocks" is a crack cocaine reference!), but there are some moments of wit and the Temple scene is a highlight. The choice of some of the lead voices did strike me as a bit strange, but Robbie Williams is surprisingly acceptable as Dougal, Kylie Minogue thankfully says little as Florence, and the rest of the cast are well chosen - especially Jim Broadbent as Brian.

Overall, this film is not a classic, but is worth a viewing - or perhaps two.

My search parameters were "Magic Roundabout Original" and it just comes up with the re-makes. It says an awful lot for the original quality of the series that, despite the fact that no one has seen it for over 40 years, and everyone of appropriate age can still remember the characters and even some of the lines.
If it has been lost, then, just like the old lost Dr Who episodes, someone must have a pirate copy somewhere.

All the expected characters in a full-length fun feature that's not taxing or particularly challenging to understand. Zebedee wake his evil Alter ego-like character (Zeebad) so the world has to be saved from a big freeze. This is an Anglo-French film that was well received in both countries but failed to make much impact in The States. The animation is best described as clean-edged & colourful. Good fun if not too memorable.

I loved this movie. When it came out in the cinema, I admit I was skeptical...How could it possibly compare to my (albeit rather hazy) memories of the original series?
However, I needn't have worried. Pathe have come up with an all-new, action-packed story (though I admit the plot WAS very simple) using our favourite characters from yesteryear that will appeal to kids and adults alike. Look out for the little in-jokes and movie references that will have you laughing aloud...And watch the kids faces when you have a giggle at the jokes that go over their heads ;)

I am totally shocked at the amount of people that have slated this movie!
It's for kids and my 2 and 4 year old LOVE it unconditionally, Fantastic music which has them both dancing and jumping around and the voices and adult humour is just priceless.
Sod the original series, it made a mockery of shows aimed at children much as Captain Pugwash and Master Bates, ( I mean come on!!)
This was truly lovely and very much an enjoyable watch for both open minded adults and children, just a shame they didn't do another one!
Oh and I have bought this for friends and Grandparents alike over the last year and have had rave reviews back from them too!

I'm a little conflicted about this film: it is currently my four-year old son's favourite film and he is watching it pretty much on a loop so I have watched it (or at least parts of it) many times.
The film bears little resemblance to the original TV program, in fact it is really an action adventure/quest movie that just happens to use the Magic Roundabout characters. The plot is simple: there is an accident, caused by Dougal's love of sugar, which releases Zeebad (Zebedee's evil twin) who wants to turn the world to ice. Dougal, Ermintrude, Brian and Dylan embark to a quest to recover 3 diamonds that are needed to stop him.
People, like me, who grew up with the original TV series will have some problems with this film as it lacks the magic that made the TV series so special. However, the CGI animation is slick and very well done and the voice cast approach the whole thing with great gusto. Tom Baker has great fun as Zeebad, Joanna Lumley and Jim Broadbent are very good as Ermintrude and Brian but as usual Bill Nighy as the hippy rabbit Dylan steals the show (he finally get worked up when he realises if the world is turned to ice there will be no grass).
Not really for adults, and certainly not for hardcore fans of the original TV show but my son loves it (hence the decent rating).
