Having discovered this summer (2007) on Amazon that all Magazine's back catalogue has been re-issued on CD, I bought this to complete my collection.

This was Magazine's final album, originally released in 1981 just after the band split up. Howard Devoto had been increasingly frustrated at not achieving mainstream success and with the pre-album single release "About The Weather" failing to chart, he quit the group.

Most importantly though, this is no half-hearted effort. It is a strong album and the decision to split was made after recording. The biggest flaw with the record is Martin Hannett's production - sounds great musically but no emphasis on vocals. Howard's vocals sound much better than on previous LP's - but he seams to either whisper, or most of the time he is simply drowned out by the music. No lyrics in the CD booklet doesn't help either, although there are detailed notes about the band in the period working up to and beyond this LP.

It is an album which repays repeated listening. The first time I heard it was on my car CD where I couldn't deciper the words and the first track in particular 'About The Weather', (a Tamla Motown sound-alike) sounds too trebly.

Highlights of this CD are 'About The Weather', 'So Lucky' - which defines the typical Magazine sound - bass heavy, and 'Come Alive' - a more outgoing song with swirly synths that sounds like early Gary Numan.

I'd recommend buying this, but also get the Howard Devoto book of lyrics which I've just ordered from Black Spring Press Ltd.

Its an odd one. Although it has a general feel of Magazine, and from a cold distant detached PoV it is interesting to hear Magazine Minus McGeoch in the studio, it lacks edge and mood. Feels strangely poppy (others have commented about the excess treble in the mix) without any threat or brooding intensity....actually at times it could have been a Two Tone ska record rather than Magazine. Its easy access (perhaps 'entry level') Magazine, but not definitive - perhaps more for completists.

I disagree with the thrust of most comments relating to this record. There are times when an edgy Magazine record fits the mood-those caustic lyrics, the creepy sneer, awkward changes in mood etc. A great band.

However, what I love about this record is that there is more or less a singular pace. It is mid-tempo and fits that kind of mood. The keyboard work is excellent and Devoto's voice seems to be used with more variety here. The lyrics are strong as usual 'Pepsi cola brings your ancestors back from the grave.' Indeed.

There is a fun sound to all this and it is true that it has pop credentials. Maybe it is best not to compare this with other Magazine records and just recognise that this one is different.

We can expect a new album soon and, I hope, a tour. Can't wait personally. Check out all Magazine records plus Buzzkunst with Devoto and Peter Shelley. Excellent. Luxuria too-especially Beastbox.
