Product Description

Product Description

Magic existed in diverse forms in the Middle Ages: from simple charms to complex and subversive demonic magic. Its negative characteristics were defined by theologians who sought to isolate undesirable rituals and beliefs, but there were also many who believed that the condemned texts and practices were valuable and compatible with orthodox piety. Magic in Medieval Manuscripts explores the place of magic in the medieval world and the contradictory responses it evoked, through an exploration of images and texts in British Library manuscripts. These range from representations of the magician, wise-woman and witch to charms against lightning, wax images for inciting love and diagrams to find treasure. Most elaborate of all the magical practices are rituals for communicating with and commanding spirits. Whether expressions of piety, ambition or daring, these rituals reveal a medieval fascination with the points of contact between this world and the celestial and infernal realms.

I was looking for something to illuminate the world of medieval magic, and stumbled upon this little but interesting book.

It is, like mentioned above, a small but very interesting book giving you an insight into how the imagery, symolisms and very shape of the grimoirs, spells and scriptures of the alchemists and witches of that time playd a huge role in the magic they preformed.

You have some interesting illustrations and explanations that will be very useful for anyone interested in looking into the field of magic from a historical point of view. I can reccommend you to pick up this book as well as Grimoires: A History of Magic Books by Owen Davies as it is a great companion, and can offer even more insights into this area of medieval thinking.

Hope to have been of assistance and wish you luck on gaining more knowledge!

A brilliant idea for a book, "Magic in Medieval Manuscripts" by Sophie Page gives us fascinating insight into the diverse mysterious forms of magic practiced in Europe during the Middle Ages and analyses the role or significance of magic in the medieval world. The magnificent art illustrations from the British Library's collections perfectly exemplify the readable text content. The book is divided into five chapters and an introduction.

Contents:

Introduction

The Medieval Magician

Natural Magic

The Power of the Image

The Magical Universe

Necromancy and Sorcery

This is my first book on the subject of magic and I love it. All those interested in art and history I think will love it too. Check it out :)
A fascinating departure from the usual illuminated manuscripts 31 Mar 2011
By S. Rasco - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I do illuminated manuscripts and calligraphy as a hobby, so I was thrilled to stumble on this interesting book that's such a departure from the usual Psalms and missals. The printing and paper are lovely and vivid. The content is fascinating - well-written, engaging, and very accessible. Lots to learn about how and why the church recorded instances of magic and sorcery, see how the practitioners are portrayed, and get a view on the ongoing mix of fascination and fear with the occult through history. If you are a lover of manuscripts, odd bits of Medieval history, or one who practices the Craft, I think you'll find it very interesting.
