3.0 out of 5 stars Good enough to get started 15 Mar 2008
I've not had either the camera or the DVD for long, so still early days and therefore probably just the right time to right a review on a product that is a guided tour of the camera. The introductory screen contains all the 'chapters' which can be seen all at once (a bit of a marathon) or individually selected to help you fine-tune and consolidate your learning. And that is all it is. In my opinion, this is enough as it does an excellent job of simplifying and de-mystifying this frankly fantastic camera. That said, this DVD takes you logically from turning the thing on, to attaching/removing the lense/s, using the two memory formats (xd and CF), changing various or all the settings; reviewing, saving, protecting and deleting your pictures ... the list goes right down to the last knob and button. It is NOT a guide to digital photography techniques - I'll have to find something else for that - but it is a comprehensive, no-frills, fairly jargon-free (some photo-babble cannot be avoided) guided tour that really did give me the necessary knowledge to fiddle with settings and get some reasonable results. Used with the manual that comes with the camera, and the remote control of your DVD player to constantly pause and rewind, this is a great little helper and highly recommended.

So, why only three stars? Well, on some aspects it does niggle: it is a little too brief in some areas (like setting the quality of capture) and it could be a tad more detailed on the important areas like how to focus/set shutter speed/aperture in manual mode. Also, it's a bit brief on the use of the built-in flash. However, the introduction this DVD provides to these functions is just good enough to get you started.

5.0 out of 5 stars does the job 4 Nov 2008
I feel the previous reviewer was being a bit harsh on this DVD, although I am grateful for his advice about the custom reset settings as I also had problems with this.

On the whole tha DVD does what it sets out to do; that is give you an overview of all the functions on the olympus E510. This camera is an entry level DSLR and so it is designed for people who want to progress from digital to something a little more professional. Yet the camera has a range of complicated features and I needed something to describe the functions in layman's terms which it does. I would also recommend you look at this DVD as soon as you get the camera to get the most from it.

I love this camera and this dvd has helped me open up some of it's potential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide. 18 Dec 2009
Verified Purchase
I've been into photography for a while so I was quite competent with handling the e-510 but this guide has taught me some good short-cuts and given me some new ideas in my photo taking. The guides are split into sections and go at a steady pace so that make it very easy to follow with your own camera. I would recommend this to anyone that has bought an Olympus E-510.

3.0 out of 5 stars Magic Lantern E510 DVD 1 Jan 2009
This is a fairly well presented review of the E510,but don't for one moment think that it is going to be the de facto guide to all aspects of the camera - it won't. What it does give is a brief visual outline of some of the the controls of the camera, which may suit those absolutely new to digital cameras and photography.

If this is what you want then it certainly does all of that - only make sure the official Olympus user manual is close to hand, because you are going to have to refer to it often.

The guide could have done a lot more to assist the user who doesn't want to have to wade through pages of the manufacturer manual. With its professional finish,I can't quite see why they didn't do it at the outset even if the DVD were to cost a few pounds more,it would have been worth it. It would appear that the Magic Lanterns book is the same. How short sighed of Magic Lantern.
