Book Description

This is the latest instalment in the UK no.1 bestselling Jessica Daniel series - but can also be read standalone if you are a new reader.

After finding an abandoned package at Manchester's Piccadilly Station, Detective Sergeant Jessica Daniel has two choices. One option leads to the entire north west transport network grinding to a halt - and more importantly Jessica missing her train - the other involves her opening the box.

For Jessica, the choice is clear - but what's in the box, who left it, and how will it affect her weekend away?

This 50,000-word "half-book" is being released to celebrate the one-year anniversary of UK no.1 bestselling novel Locked In being released.

It contains a bonus features section, with scans of the original hand-written plot outline and the full first chapter of the upcoming Think Of The Children (Jessica Daniel book four).

More About the Author

Despite two national newspaper reports to the contrary, Kerry Wilkinson is male. Honestly.

His debut, LOCKED IN, the first in the detective Jessica Daniel series, is a UK no.1 Kindle bestseller, with the first three Jessica Daniel books making him Amazon UK's top-selling author for the final quarter of 2011.

THINK OF THE CHILDREN outsold Dan Brown to become Amazon UK's no.1 Kindle pre-order. Kerry is the first formerly self-published British author to have an ebook no.1 and reach the top 20 of the UK paperback chart.

Since then, the Jessica Daniel series has continued with PLAYING WITH FIRE, THICKER THAN WATER, BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, CROSSING THE LINE and SCARRED FOR LIFE.

A spin-off from PLAYING WITH FIRE - the Andrew Hunter series - started with SOMETHING WICKED in 2014. The follow-up, SOMETHING HIDDEN, will be released in 2016.

A standalone crime novel, DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN, set in the same world as Jessica and Andrew, will be released in October 2015.

Pan Macmillan - Griffin in the US - are also publishing Kerry's young adult/fantasy/adventure series - the Silver Blackthorn trilogy. The first book, RECKONING, was released in 2014, with RENEGADE following in 2015 and RESURGENCE in 2016.

He is an occasional sports journalist and can frequently be spotted cycling the hills of Lancashire. He was born in Somerset but now lives in the north west.

Confirmed upcoming UK releases:
Renegade (Silver Blackthorn 2): 7 May 2015
Something Wicked (Andrew Hunter 1): 16 July 2015 (paperback)
Down Among The Dead Men (standalone crime): 22 October 2015 (hardback & ebook)
For Richer, For Poorer (Jessica Daniel): Jan/Feb 2016
Resurgence (Silver Blackthorn 3): May 2016
Something Hidden (Andrew Hunter 2): 2016

4.0 out of 5 stars Will She Win In The End? 26 May 2013
By prisrob TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
DS Jessica Daniel is a smart aleck, an irritating young woman in this novel. This is the second novel I have read with Jessica Daniel as an investigator, and in this one, I find her immature and grating. I am a laid back person and not much riles me, but this kind of character galls me. Her behavior evened out in the end but she needs to mature before she will become a favorite of mine.

This novel seemed scattered. I thought I was reading short stories that somehow got strung together. The storyline was OK, but too repetitive. No responsible DS would show this kind of behavior with the kind of lunatic the first wife turned out to be. DS Daniel's colleague, Dave, must have broad shoulders to put up with her.

Not my favorie book of this series, by far. I am glad the first book I read in this series was written after this one, or I would never have proceeded to finish it. I will read he novel soon to come out and decide if this series is for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but Great!!! 24 July 2012
By gailyt
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had been looking forward to this book for ages. The little group of avid fans on Facebook and Twitter had been waiting for more Jessica and Hugo for weeks.

I was not disappointed. As an interlude book - even one written by the awesome Kerry Wilkinson - I was not expecting to be as impressed as I was. The amount of twists, turns, laughs and characterisation in a mere 50,000 words is a masterclass.

Having already fallen in love with the characters following my reading of the other three books, I was glad to see that this shorter book had lost none of the charm of the longer novels.

If you've not read any of Kerry's books before, treat yourself to this one. You'll be hooked.

The best £1.59 I've spent for a long time!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Magic? It certainly was 9 Nov. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What an excellent book this is! It moves swiftly and has twists and turns that the reader couldn't expect. True, there are some that you do expect but there are more that you don't. The characters are well sculpted and you feel that you know Jessica quite well by the time that you are finished. The procedural side of the policing requires further work as it would not be possible for a mere DS to wander off and "do her own thing" the way that Jessica does - it is regretable but process and reporting lines do restrict freedom of officer's movement! However that does not detract much from the enjoyment of a good, easy to read, yarn!

Review

Found this to be a nice short read in between books – another excellent addition to the Jessica Daniel series.
Jessica still has the banter between her and Dave and you get to know Hugo a bit more. Great book and can’t really do much of a review or would give the story away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love Jessica but... 20 July 2012
By elf2
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am an avid fan of Kerry. Jessica is a wonderful character who keeps me entertained and enthralled. I really wanted to love this book, I really did. Alas it was not as good as the others in the series.

The book didn't flow as well as it could, I was expecting a fantastic story of intrigue with the box and the magic items but it didn't go anywhere in particular. The section where Jessica and Rowlands ended up visiting a guy who spotted a panther was strange, there was so much detail about the encounter yet it had absolutely nothing to do with the story. And what about Brenda? Oh dear, I just could not figure out her motivation at all especially when she believed Jessica was retaliating against her. In fact where on earth did Jessica suddenly know who was responsible for the retaliation? There wasn't a shred of evidence or subtle clues leading up to who was involved. There was a total lack of information, plot and character development apart from our Jessica.

Further plot and character development was really needed in this story. Also a clear motivation for Brenda was lacking. I also had hoped that now Macmillan are on the scene typos would be fixed - unfortunately a few remain.

Having said all that I would recommend buying it, a decent read to escape for a few hours especially to hear more about Jessica and her long suffering partner Rowlands :)
