Chris Pettitt's book is ingenious, funny and beautifully produced. Realising, courtesy of Newton's various theories that most of us glazed over at in school, that if you find the right formulae you can work through anything that cruel life throws at you, Mr Pettitt (or 'Chrispy', as he insists we call him), hilariously concocts a formula for almost every conceivable annoying aspect of modern everyday life, from supermarkets(how long will it take you to get round?) and trips to B&Q ( how much can you comfortably get into one trolley?) to holidays (what's the bikini attraction factor?)and the current emotional state of the nation(one for Messrs. Cameron and 'Blue Skies' Hilton here, I think, though I sense Mr Pettitt wouldn't approve). There's an historical section, too, solving problems for figures as diverse as Napoleon and Darwin. All of this is interlaced with funny, sometimes self-flagellating, personal anecdote. To be honest, it's his wife I feel sorry for.
I didn't do any of the maths, obviously, partly because I'm terrible at it but mostly because I was having too good a time. Very highly recommended for your personal pleasure or as a gift for chums whose ribs need tickling - though on a slightly negative note, it's possibly a bit too big for a Christmas stocking.
