5.0 out of 5 stars Power or Symphonic Metal 30 Jun 2014
By Edguy
Format:Audio CD
If you like Power or Symphonic Metal there is something in this album for you.

I liked the album on the first listen which is something that impresses me, as some albums need a few plays before I can say it gets 5 stars. Some outstanding tracks for me are:
Magic Forest
Warning
Sons of Rainbow
Endless Silence

The album has a good blend of energetic and melodic tracks, the tracks can be bombastic and catchy tunes, and you could quite easily say that you heard similar on a Nightwish, Serenity, Xandria or Ancient Bards album, but I think that's a plus.

I have always admired Amberian Dawn.
Circus Black and Cloud of the Northland Thunder in particular are very good albums. The band play a concise - the songs are almost always short - style of Neo-Classical Power Metal that no other group on earth plays as far as I know.

Yet until now there was always something slightly incongruous about the band's sound.
The furious and melancholy Malmsteen-esque shredding combined with Heidi's wonderfully clean classical-style singing created a paradoxical sense of both detachment and passion at the same time. (I suppose the same can be said about some Baroque music...but that's a topic for another time.)
The addition of Capri to Amberian Dawn has, imo, added vocals that compliment the passion of the guitar playing. Not that Heidi's vocals weren't passionate; they were just passionate in ...uh...less Heavy Metal way than Capri's are now.
In other words, I kind of like the new singer more.
It's like what some reviewer said about Threshold's vocalists.
Wilson probably has the better voice, but you could argue that McDermott was a better singer regardless.
I don't want to talk about it anymore - because bands like Amberian Dawn have a sound that is bigger than any lead vocalist they could have.

Anyway, the songs themselves are mostly business as usual for AD:
The song with the incredibly catchy pseudo-baroque hook (Endless Silence).
The song with guest vocals from a dude who sings opera (Memorial).
The sort of Hollywood set piece song (Magic Forest).
The ballad (Green Eyes).
However the music is turning a little less Power Metal and a little more Symphonic Metal.

The very first song is rather special:
It's a mid paced stomper with a chorus that would make ABBA proud (Cherish My Memory)

I think I've said enough.
One of my favourites of 2014 for sure, and as always Amberian Dawn has no real competitors to their niche style.

4.0 out of 5 stars This group as been around for a while now but ... 15 July 2014

This group as been around for a while now but this is their studio album after major changes within the group two former group members returning and a new vocalist. The album is very similar to Nightwish in many ways but slightly more relaxed in style.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Was Worried.... 16 Aug 2014
By Erin
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have been a fan of Amberian Dawn since the beginning and have admired their unique style which makes them stand out from other symphonic metal bands.
With the change of vocalist and two musicians, I was worried that they would have lost the sound that makes them AD. I have to admit to being nervous when I put on the CD for the first time.
And I was disappointed..... but then I got past the first two tracks.
Fortunately, imo, thay have retained their sound. Phew!!
I have only had the album 48 hours but I rushed to write this as the other reviewers, bar one, had failed to mention the change in personelle. I really wanted to read a helpful review before purchasing but I had to take the plunge without (the other reviewer had not written his by the time I ordered the CD.)
I have not listened enough yet to comment on whether this album is as good as their others; I have been purely concentrating on their style; but when I have I will write my views here.
To be continued.....
