"Magic Fly" is the first album (1977) of the European synth-pop act "Space" from Marseilles (France) - brainchild of the French electronic composer and musician Didier Marouani (b. 1953 in Monaco). D.Marouani was a child prodigy who wrote his first piece for piano at 5, and at 15 was admitted to Conservatory. He started his career as pop-singer, patronized by the dinosaur of French show-biz Etienne Roda-Gil (lyricist for the stars), who wrote the lyrics for the first hits of Marouani and arranged his touring with the icons of French pop - Johnny Hallyday, Claude Francois and Joe Dassin.
The debut album immediately was an international hit, which propelled "Space" into stardom in continental Europe, and, in particular, in Eastern Europe (satellite states of USSR). The album might be considered as one of "Space" best (followed by a better one - Deliverance) - catchy tunes, rich orchestrations, pleasant voices. Up to certain point "Space" should be considered as founders of synth-pop (or space disco, if you wish).
The live performances of the band were quite impressive and innovative, using lights- and laser-show, sound effects. The music was acceptable for "family listening", no wonder that D.Marouani and "Space" were among the first Western musicians invited to perform in the Soviet Union (after mellow rocker Elton John and the cream of Munich sound - "Boney M")in 1983. For that historical touring D.Marouani recruited Janny Loseth of "Titanic" fame (Eagle Rock) as lead singer and frontman.
"Space", or to be more precise, D.

This is the classic 70s album from 'Space' who had the massive chart hit with 'Magic Fly' which was only held off the top spot by the death of Elvis and his release 'Way Down'. These were the days when B sides could be as good as the A sides, and Space realised their error when they'd placed the hauntingly melancholic 'Ballad For Space Lovers' as the flip side to this single, and consequently missed another chart topper!

The music from 'Space' is timeless and they have not released a bad album. Sounds as good on vinyl as it does on CD!

Enjoy!

I bought this LP when i first left home to start work in a live-in job aged 16 1977...my room mate and I would play it full belt!! the next day our Boss called us up (we thought we were in for grilling)..instead he insisted on getting the title for himself..he was probably then not much older than my age now ..(old!!) It's as good now as was then!!!!!! never dreamt I'd own it again!! BRILLIANT !!!!!!

It was so good to hear and see ( space/Magic fly) on YOUTUBE,that i had to see if it was avalible on AMAZON.And low and behold it was. It was so good to see that it was in stock. So i bought it and i play it all the time. I do own the original LP, with a few scratches on it.But now with the CD i can now listen to it on how it should sound when it was recorded. So if you enjoyed it when it first came out then you'll love it even better now. Malc.

Well there is Oxygene by Jean Michel Jarre from 1976 for a start.
Not far behind in 1977 came Magic Fly by Space.
While the former is an ambiant type concept album, Magic Fly's tracks can be taken seperately and are more of a European disco type.
What both share is they are top class examples of early electronic music.
My copy was remastered in 2007 and I particularly enjoy the title track, Fasten Seat Belt, Ballad For Space Lovers, Tango In Space and Flying Nightmare.
There are 7 bonus tracks which just turn out to be the whole of their third album, Just Blue, from a couple of years later.
My choice of tracks are the title track, Secret Dreams, Symphony (which is partly vocal)and Blue Tears.
The other vocal tracks are in the Donna Summer/Georgio Morroder style.
The cover shows the band in space suits and they are certainly having fun making this outstanding recording, I recommend it very highly.

I first heard this in the late 70's, but have not heard it since then. Just as good, or maybe better than before.
