More About the Author

Mhairi is a Gaelic name still very much in use in Scotland.
In the Gaelic tongue, the letters ' Mh ' are pronounced as a ' v ' - so Mhairi is pronounced ' Varry '.

When she began to work as a professional, Mhairi started under the name ' Vav ', as it is easier to use.

She has been healing ever since she can remember being on her uncle's farm as a little girl. While the other children were asked to find the chicken's eggs or clean the horses' tack, she would be given the broken animals to fix. "She's got the Way with her", they said.

Ever since, she has had horses, dogs and cats of her own. Usually, they would find their own way to her - needing care and healing, and would then stay. She trained in massage and then chiropractic to become a freelance professional.

Product Description

"This book is a rare combination of unputdownable story-telling and personal opportunity..." "Full of humour and personal stories, this is neither a fantasy nor a textbook. Mhairi's writing will catch the imagination of anyone who wishes to peer behind the gloss of present-day life. She ranges from the roots of Old Magic in nature and Mother Earth, passing animals and humans, through past lives and modern life to spells and shamanism. She describes many aspects of the sixth sense, bringing them into the present and offering meditations to try at home. Story-telling, autobiography and personal opportunity...

A beautiful book packed full of fascinating stories. The style of writing is different from what I am used to and I got a tiny bit confused in the beginning then realised that it was clear that she was in a previous lifetime and then it was the present day. Mhairi's love of horses comes through strongly throughout the book. I found myself feeling sad at parts and laughing at other parts and even suprised at some parts. Her obvious natural healing gift is so touching and sometimes she seems so sweet and then slightly sassy too. I guess they say everyone is your mirror and I saw myself in her. It must be my irish temper haha that comes through sometimes. She is a skilled natural healer as well as a great author. I agree with most of her views on things and in particular that we have lived many lives but don't always remember them all. The Old Magic is something very special and I think she is very blessed to have been given this knowledge from the people that "initiated" her when she was a young girl. Reading this book has made me want to further some of my interests that I already have in esoteric related paths and I am keen to try the excerises at the back of the book. I feel this is a book so full of detail and things that I can learn from that I am going to re read it. I also feel that her honesty throughout the book makes it very humbling and certainly makes me realise that I need to open my own eyes more clearly to what is around me. Especially with birds and animals in my garden. I have become disconnected from them in the past months and reading this book shows me that it is never too late to get back on track and reconnect to things that mean a lot to you like the animals around me.Read more ›

I received this book for free on my Kindle for a fair review. And the fair review it will be, because... See above.

It's hard to pinpoint what the "Old Magic In Everyday Life" is, the book is written in almost a fantasy genre, mixed with a memoir, sprinkled with teachings not alien to the author of the "Secret". And whilst I appreciated the good-hearted reminders to us all on how to be good, it made a somewhat scattered read. I enjoy books about life and our eternal connection to this planet and good karma, books that remind us that we reap what we sow and that we must not forget the influence we, human-beings, have on everything that surrounds us.

"Old Magic..." is not an easy book to get into (perhaps the structure of the book was to blame, maybe it was the occasional typos and misplaced punctuation). Moreover, while I was longing to read more about magic, I found myself reading about horses and dogs, when I was getting into the fascinating word of a chiropractic, I was suddenly faced with pages on Mhairi's previous lives.

I can endorse this book to anyone somewhat interested in spirituality and mysticism, they won't be disappointed. But saying this, I admit "Old Magic..." will be much more appreciated (and understood) by a target audience, rather than just by anybody.

I received this book free in return for a review.

I found the book to be a sort of mish-mash, comprising both an autobiography, tales of country life, farming, including a lot about horses, and a little about "old magic" and healing, and some fascinating accounts of the author's previous lives, a long, long time ago.

The book was basically absolutely well-written; however, the author's problems with the placing of apostrophes drove me to distraction, particularly her use of "it's" instead of the possessive "its", and use of "who's" instead of the possessive "whose". These mistakes detracted from her otherwise so eloquent prose.

I would have appreciated knowing a little more precisely where the author hailed from in Northern Scotland, where the folks, or some of them, were so knowledgeable about "magic", since I myself spent much of my youth in Northern Scotland without encountering such wise or knowledgeable country people.

The author is patently an old soul, gifted in healing and wise herself and, in view of the title, I would have found it pertinent for the book to have been more narrowly devoted to "magic" and accounts of healing both animals and people, instead of just sporadically. The parts in the book about these subjects were definitely the most interesting for me, but I'm not so enamoured of country life and horses, though I know many are, and these people will appreciate this material.

At the back you will find "a journey to find your soul purpose", a grounding exercise, an inspiring poem about death by Mhairi's mother-in-law, and more.

Thus, though I didn't exactly find the book to be an easy read, I did find it interesting/captivating in part.

Mhairi Simon has written a jewel of a book that shines with a rare inner light, inviting us to gaze deeper into hidden mysteries from the dawn of human civilization up to modern times. In these mysteries of intuitive ways of knowing, communicating, and communing with with our natural surroundings we can gain a better understanding of who we truly can be as guardians of the natural areas we reside within.

Simon's autobiographical book spans a handful of decades of her life so far, taking the reader on a thrilling journey from her early days in rural Scotland where as a young girl she loved to commune with nature and observe natural rhythms and ways of Earth, air, water, animals and plants. Mhairi was a very special kind of girl, who could invite a village dog to jump her high fence and spend happy hours playing together, so she wouldn't be alone. As Mhairi matured, her ability to facilitate energy healing drew the attention of townsfolk, who increasingly came to seek her out when horses and other animals fell ill.

"Old Magic in Everyday Life" provides rare insights into the making of Wise Woman, sharing observations and surprising turns of events along with insights into the thoughts and feelings of a young magical girl with a knack for calling animals... including wild animals... and for healing animals, too. In this day and age in which so many people are losing touch with natural surroundings, much of the magical traditions that Mhairi showed early facility with and gleaned further knowledge of through wise elders and mentors is becoming almost a lost art, "Old Magic in Everyday Life" is all the more special.
