The only problem I have is with the supplier. The filter and carry bag were missing from the box and although minor details, I thought I'd get in touch through Amazon and ask about these. To date there's been no reply which I find really annoying. Firms who are quick to take your money for the original purchase should at least have the decency to reply, even if its just to say sorry but they don't have any of these left.
Curiously, we also find that white wines are similarly improved.
Well, they were all right.
This really does have a marked effect on the taste of the wine.
I've raved about it since I bought it, tried several different wines and each one is much better put through this rather than straight from the bottle.
The best I can suggest is get one, pour a little from the bottle into a glass, drink it, now at least half fill the glass via this and try it (needs a little more to get it working)
Hold it straight, do not obstruct the holes on the sides, pour from a little distance above the glass, pour enough so the reservoir at the top is at least half full all the time, stop in time not to overfill your glass.
It should make a slurping sound, if you think about it, thats the same sound wine professionals make when they are tasting wine, aerating the wine just like they do.
Try it with water first, until you see that the water coming out is bubbly, once you have the knack, try it for real and see the difference.
I love it.
We don't live in an age where people take time to decant wine after properly storing wine in cellars at optimum temperatures and humidity etc. This aerator is not going to be able to replace all the benefits that these bring, but given the cost and time that these imply the aerator gives a huge improvement to the experience of the wine you buy without having to buy a sommelier and a wine cellar and all the infrastructure and overheads that go with them.
Now wine is enjoyed by everyone even people of very modest backgrounds like me and by using an aerator we can afford to get a huge improvement in the wine for a tiny outlay.
A neighbour used one when I went round for a new year glass of wine and snacks. I was surprised at the resulting improvement in the quality of the wine given that it was a moderate quality bottle. It added depth and complexity to the wine and brought the wine to its best lifting it from being a mediocre experience to being a very enjoyable one.
Wine really responds well to being properly aerated bringing out its full character, much of which would have remained hidden and undiscovered.
There is a more expensive brand of this aerator, and I really don't know if there is a relative difference in performance between them, but this one is doing the job for me.
The value for money is great and as it improves every bottle of wine drunk, making each wine really lift its performance and the actual experience of taste and finish is so much better and much more enjoyable.
To get started I used to put a little un-aerated wine in one glass and a little aerated wine in another and do a taste comparison. We always found we preferred the aerated wine, but we always had the choice of which way to go.
The device is now the default method for us.
The noise of the air being sucked into the wine raised a few eyebrows so I now decant the wine into a jug or an empty bottle (I'm too cheap to buy a decanter) before serving it.
The device comes with a drip catching stand and neat little filter. It does look good.
There is also a black cloth bag for storage. The aerator is kept in a drawer, so the bag is ideal for keeping it all together and unscratched.
Most wine we drink is less than a tenner, but if I did buy older, more expensive wine then I would do incorporate the taste test just to make sure.
I am really pleased with it: it works; it looks good; it's affordable.
