5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy at its best, 27 Mar 2008
By Shazzy (London UK) - See all my reviews
I completely agree with the above review, I was hoping to see the romance progress between Kate and Curran, however there were some great scenes between them and I think this actually lets you focus more on the story but i'm sure in the next book things will speed up!

I couldn't put it down and stayed up until 2am in the morning to finish it, I love the development of the characters and we get to see a different side of Kate, the scene when curran is pumping weights is hilarious, the storytelling is superb and it seemed longer than 272 pages

This is one of the best fantasy books that i've read for a long time and if there's one book you buy this year it should be this, I would definitely recommend Magic Bites aswell,

I read Magic Bites at the end of last year so I only had a few months to wait for Magic Burns but now I have to wait another year, I could have read another 300 pages and it wouldn't be enough,

5.0 out of 5 stars Ilona Andrews can do no wrong......., 27 Mar 2008
By Lisa Hamilton (Perth, WA Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Ilona Andrews has writen a great sequel to Magic Bites.

Magic Burns begins a couple of months after the Red Point stalker murders. Kate gets a late night phone call from Jim to do a Merenary Guild job. While in the process of apprehending Jeremy, a homicidal phromaniac armed with a salamander in sphere of enchanted glass, a third party shots Jeremy with an crossbow bolt killing Jeremy and melting into the darkness. Shortly thereafter Jim gets a pack call and leaves Kate to take Jeremys body and the Salamander into the Guild so that they can collect the bounty. Kate can not carry the heavy body of Jeremy and the Salamander at the same time. Not wanting to leave either Jeremy or the Salamander behind effectively losing some of the bounty she cuts of Jeremy's head as proof of the kill in a typical Kate problem solving fashion.

So begins the new adventure mystery for Kate. Trying to track down the crossbow bolts owner leads Kate to Red a shaman street boy who helped Kate and Derek the werewolf boy wonder in Magic Bites. Red asks Kate to guard Julie a young thirteen year old girl who is looking for her lost mother. Julie's mother is affiliated with a group of Witches who have gone missing.

In this book we find out a bit more about Kates foster father and Kates powers are explained in greater detail. I loved the addition of Andrea a Order Knight who has her own secrets. We also get to explore a little bit of the Witches and the WereHyena sub culture in this world gone crazy with magic and tech warring for dominance. Magic definitely gaining the upper hand.

The only gripe I have about this book is that Curran and Kate's romance is taking so long to heat up. Which is not really a gripe but a personal preference for the romance to move along at a faster pace. In Magic Burns the romance is definately heading in the right direction even if Kate does not realize it yet.

I really hope Ilona Andrews can write faster so that I do not have to wait for a whole year for the next book. She has created a fantastic new world and I have to wonder where she gets her great ideas from. Wait to you read about the trailer park gone crazy. If you like Magic Bites absolutely purchase the second in the series it will not disappoint you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic Burns brightly, 25 Jun 2009
By Diana (England) - See all my reviews
I absolutely adored this book. It was better than the first; it was a little bit different in that it was less a murder mystery and more a missing person's case this time around. Kate Daniels is a down on her luck mercenary who also works for the Order of Merciful Aid in Atlanta. Kate isn't a fully fledged knight, but she works for them nonetheless and also 'enjoys' Friend of The Pack status. In Kate's world magic is well and truly out -- leaving the inhabitance to battle its effects as it constantly wipes out technology in unexpected waves.

In this book Kate finds herself taking charge of a street kid dumped on her by Red. The girl's mother is missing and she needs Kate's help to get her back. There's also cosmic trouble when a phenomenon known as a flare (something that occurs every few years) occurs -- a flare being a time when the already erratic magic waves run even more rampant. In terms of her personal life, Kate is busy entertaining 'fanciful notions' about a certain grey-eyed blond who is apparently very interested in her. As if she doesn't already have enough on her plate what with mouthy urchins, a reckless libido, and magic trouble, she's asked by the Pack to retrieve some stolen property.

We see all the familiar faces from the first book back in Magic Burns. I was delighted to have more 'boy wonder' (Derek) because I find his friendship with Kate to be adorable. I was surprised to see very minor characters like Red return (the street kid from the first book). I liked the new faces presented also; like Bran. Andrea was wonderful too! Curran is just a fabulous character. He's totally worthy of Kate and he gets a nice bit of character development as well. Their scenes are very well written and brimming with chemistry -- I laughed when Curran nearly dropped the dumbbell on himself because Kate was teasing him. I definitely like the speed at which their relationship is progressing; when a romance comes about too fast all the tension and longing is sucked out of it. So far it's been beautifully done. The scene lightly exploring Kate's loneliness was touching and it's nice that she's not too proud to discuss it with someone.

The heart of the story was very much Kate's continuing ambiguous relationship with Curran and her new charge. There were so many great lines in Magic Burns. That wonderfully droll humour was very well placed and doesn't ever feel farcical -- it suits the tone of the book very well. We were also treated to more hints as to Kate's true lineage (I think I have an idea who her dad might be)... I'm looking forward to finding out for sure at any rate.

The plot was very action packed with barely a moment left for a breather. And I loved every minute of it. From the first page to the hilarious final scene. Amazing!
