5.0 out of 5 stars Magical, 26 Mar 2007

This is a lovely book. We had it on almost permanent loan from the library at one stage and my daughter insisted that I read it nearly every night because she enjoyed it so much. With charming illustrations and well chosen words John Burningham conjures up his characters of a slightly put upon father, an interfering grandmother and a lonely little boy who enjoys wonderful adventures at night in his magic bed. Delightful and touching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Book, 7 Aug 2008
I love this book, and the children do too. A very happy story but not sickly sweet. Relevant illustrations and a book that can be read and read again. Also a great bed time story. Buy it!

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit scary, 27 Sep 2009

I loved John Burningham's little book for toddlers when my children were small, and was pleased to see his books for slighly older children - I bought several. This book was a bad choice for my granddaughter, who sometimes has bad dreams. (Don't they all?) I think the idea that when you go to bed you might end up anywhere is potentially the stuff of toddler nightmares. It doesn't even have a reassuring ending.

The other Burningham books I bought are great fun, and I have no qualms about them. But I don't even want to give this one to a charity shop.

This is everything I used to imagine being able to do as a child. My sister and I both had flying beds and lots of adventures. Read more
