SHORT REVIEW
============
If I had to give some basic description of this unit, I would have to describe it as the equivalent of an Android Mobile phone, with Garmin devices being the iPhones.

Whereas the Explorist 710 is a powerhouse of a GPS, with a lot of customisable features, it might be a little clunky, and a bit more fiddly to "sort out", than its equivalent Garmin rival. It really is a personal decision however, I've previously used Garmins, and so can see the merits of both brands.

I personally am enjoying the freedom I get with the Explorist 710.

LONG VERSION
============
As an environmental researcher I've had the pleasure of using several GPS receivers over the years, mostly Garmin.

However I felt let down with my last Garmin device, so felt it was time to try something new, the Magellan Explorist 710 was it. My unit came bundled from another supplier with a 4gb MicroSD card with the complete 1:50k Ordnance Survey mapping. The OS maps are pretty good, though there is one downside, in that they are locked to the card they came on. This means that although the Explorist 710 can support up to 32gb of additional memory, if you want to use those OS maps, you're stuck with the 4gb card they came on, and the 600mb or so that is left spare!

Not to worry though, one of the strongest features of this unit is how versatile it is to add your own custom maps. It didn't take much hunting on the internet to find user-led forums and guides on how to create custom maps based on freely accessible spatial data. I've had my device for 5 days and already have a slightly more detailed Ordnance Survey map and other graphical maps on it. You DON'T have to pay a premium for maps from Garmin or Magellan!

Switching maps on the fly is also quite easy to do, requiring only a couple of screen presses. It can take a couple of seconds to load the new maps, but this isn't much of an issue when considering how valuable these feature is, and how quick it is to select the new maps!

The unit itself feels very rugged and robust in the hand. The touch screen is quite responsive too. Unlike my Garmin 62S Garmin GPSMAP 62S - Worldwide, it doesn't feel like a cheap plastic toy.

The preloaded Summit & City series maps are quite good, turn-by-turn routing is something I've briefly looked at on the unit. It'll never be as good as a dedicated SatNav, but it'll do the job if you don't want to have 2 gadgets!

The built in camera takes fairly decent stills, videos aren't as good. However just bear in mind that it's only a 3.3mp camera, so the chances are you'll have a higher resolution camera on you. I personally will be using the camera function to record survey spots in the field.

The Magellan Software, VantagePoint, is also quite good. It lacks some of the features found in Garmins "BaseCamp" software, but it also has several features Garmin lacks. I find the geocaching intergration a bit better.

Out and about the GPS on paper doesn't seem to be quite as accurate as the Garmin 60 and 62 series receivers, however we're talking a metre or two difference, which doesn't amount to much.

My only gripe is that it takes maybe 2-3 times as long to power on as a Garmin unit would. One could argue this is that there is maybe more to be loaded. It's not a major issue really as I tend to just turn my GPS on at the start and leave it on, there's not much point turning these things on and off and on again!

There's a good userbase on the internet as well, so questions and answers are quick and easy to find. I can only hope that as time passes, Magellan will become more popular, so that the userbase grows. I'm very excited at what could be achieved with these units with a bit of tinkering!

All in all, I'm extremely happy with the unit.

I am not very techy and this is the first GPS unit I have owned. This unit has a really easy to use menu system - easy to plan routes and swithc between the four menus which are accessed from the corners of the screen. I love the auto assign button which enables you to assign functions, places etc as a short cut menu. The video camera, microphone and camera work really well. I take this running and biking and geotag places on the route and share them with my wife on return! The European turn by turn road mapping was brilliant when I went to Annecy recently. I picked up the hire car at Geneva airport and used the 710 to take me to the hotel. Driving in france on my own to a new place was made stress free and also much safer!! There's so much functionality on this it is still taking me time to understand its full potential!!
