5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the other reviews!, 23 May 2001
The hardest thing about reading Melanie Rawn's books is her habit of making you fall for a character and then killing them off.

I snatched this book off the shelf when it came out and I wasn't disappointed. This series is different to her previous books; more political, more emotional. Less excitement, I suppose, if all you're looking for is skin-of-teeth escapes and major battles. I think she's still on form, but by concentrating on a quieter, less attractive (less beautiful?) character she's confounded some people's expectations. And it wasn't a game of 'spot the bad guy' (see review above), more 'see how people's hopes betray them'.

My only disappontment is that she's stopped work on this series to write something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, can't wait for the next one!, 24 May 2001
I was dubious about beginning this trilogy. I had seen a few bad reviews and wondered if Melanie Rawn had lost her touch. Not so! Her books still enthrall me and wrap me up in the magical world which she so easily portrays. The only bad thing about this trilogy is that the third book has not yet been published!

5.0 out of 5 stars A "stay up till 1 reading " kind of book!, 1 Sep 2003
The first book in the series was absolutely brilliant, so I had high hopes for this one at the same time as being a little bit worried it wouldn't be of the same standard. However, in its own way this book is just as good. I was slightly annoyed by the large time gaps that occasionally occurred (although i couldn't expect Rawn to write about every day of the characters' lives!). This is more about Cailet than Sarra and it shows since most of the book is from her viewpoint or those around her. However Sarra and her infamous husband are harldly left out by any means. Not quite as action packed as book one, it had more mystery and was slower paced. However when the action does come, be warned...it's enough to keep you reading until the early hours of the morning. Anyway, there's no point reading reviews on this book to decide whether to read it because if you've read the first one, you won't even consider letting this one slide!
