An enjoyable read 13 Jan 2012
By Oliver
Format:Kindle Edition
This seems to be the first works of an author who has a clear plot in their head and wants to put it to paper, but doesn't quite understand the fine arts of writing as well as most authors do when they make their break through. The storyline is interesting enough and has a nice progression. The author also likes to put in comical asides from the main character's point of view, which are always welcome which while sometimes a bit irrelevant, altogether add a lot to the story.

The main gripe that I have about the story is that it randomly shifts between characters without giving any warning and when you're trying to tell a story from both first and third person, this is very hard to do. That being said, the characters are enjoyable enough and there aren't any which genuinely annoy you, which is quite rare nowadays.

It's a fun book which wont cost much and is definitely worth a download in my opinion. It's pacey and enjoyable, and from what I've heard the sequel follows up well. Just be ready to have plot thrust at you now and then.

Plot- 7/10
Characters- 6/10
Writing- 3/10
Overall- 5/10

The story itself is fairly familiar: Prequel showing some recent violent history in which a babe is parked with common people and then the main story starts with the young man being given his birthright and his destiny. There are some very nice bits -- some scenes where the level 1 villain does a good, intelligent job of being bad -- and the characters are alive and interesting enough to make me the reader care about them, but ...

... but there are places where it feels as if the author is fixing problems as he goes. For example: near the end one of the major characters writes a letter. At that point the author gives a piece of her background, explaining how she comes to be literate when most of her fellows wouldn't be. It's a reasonable and wholly believable explanation but I think it could/should have been done in advance, so the reader accepts that she is literate and isn't distracted from the purpose of her letter. There are one or two others in this style and some American colloquialisms that jar on me, given the Fantasy/Medieval setting, but none severe enough to be considered faults.

I am hoping that this is the start of a series, because that's what it feels like. There's a good cast of characters established, a very solid looking foundation for the magic system, some Big Bad pointed out and an Evil Minion or two in place ..... it just needs a good hard twist to wring out the original ideas and tighter editing and this could easily be a five star series.
