I liked this book and read it before setting off for Madrid. It has a lot of information in it and gives some useful historical detail. I found it a bit difficult to use when out and about as all of the info is sectioned by barrios (districts) and as a first time visitor to Madrid it all seemed a bit confusing. I used it together with the eyewitness top 10 madrid guide and found that using them both gave me an excellent balance of info and detail to get about and see everything.

I've returned today from three days in Madrid where I attempted to use the guide. I've used Lonely Planet Guides before, because they recommend affordable places and advise about tourist traps. However, I don't think I'll be using them again. I found this guide hard to use. Though some of the text is well informed, for example about the Prado, it's not user friendly. It seems to require reference to several different pages to actually locate a restaurant nor hotel. The maps are very small, and some of the print so tiny as to be illegible. The way in which restaurants are listed - by area rather than alphabetically - makes the job of finding them doubly difficult, and the listing isn't keyed to the map's grid - you have to look elsewhere for that. All much too hard for me! Finally, a word of warining. My bag containing wallet and passport was stolen in the Arrivals Hall of Madrid Airport while it was next to me and a friend. Hold on to yoursMadrid: City Guide (Lonely Planet City Guide).

Lonely Planet have produced another sound guide. When i booked my ticket to Madrid it was a city i had only a patchey knowledge of,but this guide more than filled in the gaps.Whilst coverage of sights is at times thin,it has great listings for the cities many bars and clubs,as well as it's restraunts and cafes.I would highly recommend a visit to Madrid and highly recommend this Lonely Planet guide.
