Madonna The Performance Review is a documentary film which concentrates on this extraordinary woman s work as a dancer, a performer and an actress. From her astonishing music videos to her staggering live shows, and a reassessment of her often unfairly criticised film career, this program looks again at how she has entertained us for more than a quarter of a century to an extent few if any have ever come close to matching. Features include rare and classic performance footage of Madonna, reassessed by a panel of esteemed experts. Obscure footage and rarely seen photographs. Exclusive interviews with many who have worked closely and known well Madonna throughout her life and career, including Mark Kamins, producer of her first album, John Plaff, her high-school classmate, studio owner Bob Blank, her biographer Lucy O Brien, DJ and Journalist Kris Needs and others.

So, yet another unnofficial Madonna biography/documentary DVD to review - they're everywhere and being a massive Madonna fan and collector i think i must have at least 6 now! Some are good, some are average and some are downright awful.

But this DVD presents perhaps the best take i've seen on the format. Some of conversations with the talking heads are taken from the same interviews as used in one of the other DVDs (i think it might have been the Girl Power/Sex Bomb one) so although you'd be forgiven for thinking you've already seen this one, it is actually different.

All the aforementioned talking heads are very knowledgable and present some interesting opinions on Madonna, on the whole this DVD is pretty praising to Madonna whereas others i've seen have been less biased. This one goes right from the first album through to Confessions and its accompanying tour although once again, as so many Madonna biographies/documentaries do, this pretty much skips out the fantastic Bedtime Stories album.

Once again, the crucial element to this DVD is that it focuses on Madonna as the singer and performer, not ever getting bogged down in personal issues ensuring the whole programme moves along at a good pace and remains interesting. And best of all, the production value of this DVD is high when compared to what many of the others have to offer. Pictures and videos aren't grainy or blurred and best of all we get lots of clips from Madonna's music videos and movies.

It's little touches like this that just give this package the feel that a fair deal of effort has actually gone into the making of it - and for that it is all the more enjoyable. If you haven't seen any of the unnoficial Madonna DVDs yet, i definitely recommend getting this one first as it really is one of the best of a mixed bunch.

Madonna is my all time faourite singer and I looove tv shows about her! that's why i bought this when i saw it, it doesnt have any of her music on it but that doesn't really matter.. I mean who needs her music in a documentary anyway? It's great, and really has a good look at the life of one of the best performers we've seen in a long while.. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes Madonna.

Well it was a good documentary. They kept pronouncing Madonna's last name wrong though. Only thing that really annoyed me was a special quiz feature called "The hardest Madonna quiz ever!" It wasn't that hard and one question was "Where was the video for Into the Groove shot?"
That video was all clips from her film Desperately Seeking Susan which was shot in New York and New Jersey. The DVD's answer was "Venice." They obviously confused it for 'Like A Virgin.'
Sorry I'm a Madonna fanatic so I take my M trivia very seriously lol
They skipped over Bedtime Stories and Music though too.

Anyway it was still pretty good.
