I was never a Madonna-interested person, even after a one time girlfriend insisted I accompany her to Madonna's first UK outside performance in Roundhay Park, Leeds in the late 80s. But curiously she grew on me after seeing this performance on video. She has chosen all the right songs and costumes/settings to make this concert video a memorable and entertaining one - and I'm not just referring to the "hustler-look" rendition of "In The Groove" which every hot blooded male would appreciate. Being very early Madonna footage,- and what female entertainer is better when she is younger- this now, in my mind has classic status, full of energy, vibrancy, rawness, colour and one of the best of the first "theatrical" performances permeating show biz at this time. A trailblazer of this type of concert by an entertainer who has clearly gone out of her way to please her audience. Nostalgia freaks - snap this up quickly. You wont be disappointed.

After the success of the first 2 albums Madonna titled, Madonna and Like a Virgin, she embarked on a tour to promote both. The tour began on April 10, 1985 and ended on June 11, 1985. The VHS entire viewing is 55 minutes and features Madonna's most notable hits from both albums. Quite noticeable is Madonna's look and image of the lace gloves, rag on hair, and elaborate accessories. The opening act was the Beastie Boys. The Virgin Tour received a gold certification by the RIAA. According to Wikipedia, "The video was certified two-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipment of 100,000 copies and in September 1986, it received a "Video Software Dealers Award" for the Most Popular Music Video." The release of the video reached #2 for 65 weeks.

The Virgin Tour was done in the United States and Canada only. This VHS was filmed at Cobo Arena in Detroit, Michigan on May 25, 1985. The video begins with Madonna talking on how she wanted to become famous and be a big star in a very tongue and cheek fashion. Dressed from her image at the time which was after she did the Live To Tell Video and during her Shanghai Surprise filming Madonna was sporting a Marilyn Monroe style very glamorous. She says:

"When I was young, I had a dream. I went to New York. I had a dream. I wanted to be a big star. I didn't know anybody, I wanted to sing, I wanted to dance. I wanted to do all those things. I wanted to make people happy, I wanted to be famous, I wanted everybody to love me. I worked really hard, and my dream came true."

Toward the end of the video she ends once again talking in a very flirtatious way and states, "...it's all about flirting..." as she starts to laugh hysterically.

After that introduction, the tour begins. As you then begin to see the fans reaching to the show wearing their Madonna "wanna-be" outfits sporting the same jewelry inspired by Madonna and hair tied in a rag.

Many hits were included on the performance numbers including Into the Groove / Everybody / Shoo-Bee-Doo, Like A Virgin & Other Big Hits, Crazy for You, and "Material Girl". The live performances of "Dress You Up" and "Like A Virgin" were so stunning they were released as music videos.

The entire concert is a great testament to how Madonna began and continues throughout her career to display confidence, highly energetic dancing, and phenomenal singing.

The songs from the concert include Like A Virgin and Material Girl as Madonna ended the tour with those numbers and wore a wedding dress in it's dance routine. Fans went wild with even 1 jumping on the stage and having security stop him. The beginning had the smashing Dress You Up number displaying raw but classic singing and dance steps sure to be classic to this day. The songs, "Angel", "Borderline", and "Burning Up" were removed from the track-list since it was not her best.

Towards the middle of the concert the fast energetic fast paced song "Gambler" set the stage on fire as fans cheered and yelled from the emotions. Madonna sang with fury, passion and even cried on a slow song ballad titled, "Crazy For You". She spoke to the crowd and poured her love non-stop. It was her night and she states, "I wasn't elected a Homecoming Queen but I sure feel like one now!" All throughout the show the fans roared, the dancing was phenomenal and the 2 back up dancers and band put a show making a lasting mark to this day!

The track-list was as follows: Dress You Up, Holiday, Into The Groove, Everybody, Gambler, Lucky Star, Crazy For You, Over and Over, Like A Virgin, and Material Girl. The VHS was never released on DVD but instead on Laser Disc. It was a great time to experience the show live or to just buy the VHS tape. Many have made the Laser to DVD rumors have stated. But to this day her management never released it on DVD. The entire viewing is spectacular and definitely impacting even now!

The "The Virgin Tour" has more looks into her personal style, dance skills, and beginnings. To really appreciate this video I recommend you see it with an open mind. It starts off with her saying a warm hello and short welcome. The live performance features 2 dancers, 3 changes of costumes, and a crowd of wild fans. I liked this video so much I never returned it to the rental place so that should help you in your decision to buy it. Songs included are: Dress You Up, Holiday, Into The Groove, Everybody, Gambler, Lucky Star, Crazy For You, Over And Over, Like A Virgin, and Material Girl. She wears blue-purple in the first 4 songs, black in 4 more and then white for the last 2.
The beginning stage show is very similar in fashion. You see choreographed steps, and close-ups of her singing, and flirting with the crowd. Toward the end you see a more laid back sensual side of her, as she feels more at ease in "Crazy For You" "Like A Virgin" and "Material Girl". The last song, makes this selection completely worth buying. The performance was for "Material Girl". The male dancers get close to her as they touch and walk with her taking turns trying to win her over. Here she puts a fur, more jewelry and asks the crowd, "Do you think I'm a Material Girl?" as she screams, "I don't need money I need love!" She takes off all her jewelry, gloves, and material things throwing it to the crowd as a sign of her affection when all of a sudden her dad grabs her arm and walks her off stage. She goes back to get her fur and kiss the crowd. She ends talking again saying, "It's all about flirting!" The tape ends with her laughing endlessly so it is apparent the message was: It's All About Flirting!

I first saw this when I was about 9 years old and I was mesmerised by Madonna! She was just so energetic, glamorous, colourful, cool and fun. I can still watch The Virgin Tour video now (at 34!) and it has the same affect on me. Madonna is just outstanding - you can't take your eyes off her. Even though the choreography and stage sets are not as flamboyant and ambitious as her later tour shows, this is my favourite Madonna video because it showcases her raw talent, enthusiasm and star quality. I wish The Virgin Tour was available on DVD!

Rumours are than this concert is finally being released on DVD and Blu Ray this year. Whether it will be a US only or world-wide release is still unclear. I'd love to see this classic concert in Blu Ray glory - but even a dvd would be a welcome upgrade from the fast deteriorating VHS footage.

She performs very well in her first concert, showing what she is made of. Also her performance is very much an indication of what we could expect from a very talented woman. She shows so much determination and energy with every song she performs. Good on her!!!
