This movie starts off quite well (except for the extremley camp and dragged out "Madman Marz" song one guy insists on singing). The story is that of a man named Marz, or "Madman Marz" as people now like to call him, who went insane one night and butchered his family with an axe. The towns people discovered his crime and hung him from a tree. When they returned the next day, the body was gone...DUH! Obviously, he escaped and still lurks in the woods killing anyone who disturbs his peace. These woods are of course, the exact same place where a sumer camp is situated and it comes as no surprise that the camp counsilers are up for the chop.
The flashbacks of the murders Marz commits are quite effective and they set the mood. It gets you feeling a bit on edge. The teens (played by 30 year olds) are told that if you say is name above a whisper, then he will hear you and come after you. You can guess what happens next..."Madman Marz" some idiot screams, and the terror begins.
The first death is one of the best, a throat slashing that made me jump like hell! The next few deaths are quite scary and entertaining and at this point I was quite scared and very pleased that the film wasn't too predictable. There are also a few false scares that really got me. However, as the film progresses, it goes downhill. The characters can't act, they are unrealistic and the script is sloppy. All the boys and girls are in couples, so some stupid and badly written relationship problems and romance scenes are stuck in there to give the film more depth...trust me, it didn't work! There is only one real chase scene...a bad one!(the victim gives away her position by screaming when the killer hasn't even seen her, and then does one stupid thing after another. She even hides in a fridge! Come on!)
The infamous "head under the car hood" death scene could have beed done better and the gore is mostly effective, but occaisionally OTT and unrealistic. The ending of a typical 80's slasher flick like this should be a climax leading to a big final showdown. This movie fails in this department. I felt the ending was dull and suspence-less more than anything else.
It is good in parts, not so good in others. A horror fan like me will be able to enjoy it on some levels because of some inventive deaths and some frightning moments. It generally follows the 80's slasher formula so you might say it is a must for horror buffs but otherwise, you might want to avoid this movie. Genrerally quite entertaining, but don't expect a masterpiece.
