A gentle but cruel meditation on violence and 'peace'. The brutal, meat and metal-grinding war in the fictional tropical country of Gazth-Sonika seems a world away from the seemingly peaceful lives of the people of the France/Italy-like Nafrece. But neither world is quite what it seems. At first there seems no connection between the assured gunwoman for hire 'Madlax' and the strange events that start to unfold- and as mysterious characters pop in and out of view, it could become a confusing watch. But with the story punctuated by balletic action interspersed with gentle characterisation and setup sequences, things never become dull.
Be warned that as mystical/fantasy elements play a key role in the story, those demanding absolute conventional realism in their adventure tales might want to bring a fair amount of salt. But to my mind the depth these elements bring to the story and the indefinable atmosphere more than justify their inclusion.
It's from the makers of Noir, I gather, but the story flows far better and the action sequences are miles ahead in my view. Still not for everyone, perhaps, but I think it deserves a big audience!
