Madeline (Hatty Jones) is the most mischievous of the twelve friends who live at a Parisian school run by Miss Clavel (Frances McDormand). Her sunny existence is threatened by starchy old Lord Covington (Nigel Hawthorne), who is on a campaign to have the school closed down. It is up to Madeline and her friends, who include the equally precocious Pepito and a dog who saved her from drowning, to stop him.

Anyone who has enjoyed the books will love this film, which brings Madeline's Paris to life and involves Madeline and her friends in a madcap adventure to save their school when closure threatens. Interest for the boys is provided by the next-door neighbour, Pepito, but on the whole this is a girl's film, and a very enjoyable one. It will teach your children to exclaim "voila" in a convincing French accent too!

A really exquisite movie that will make you laugh, cry, and keep putting it on again for more

The movie is about a girls school in Paris and the adventures of 12 adorable little girls, with the cutest and most interesting of all being the plucky flame haired little tyke, with a heart of gold Madeline (Hatty Jones).

With adventures taken from the timeless books, including little Madeleine's appendicitis, and her rescue from the water by the golden retriever Genevieve, the centerpiece of the story is the battle of the girls and their loving guardian Miss Clavel (Frances McDormand) to keep their school and their dog, against the cruel plans of Lord Covington (Nigel Hawthorne) and also foiling a thuggish tutor cum kidnapper Leopold (Ben Daniels)

This is really beautiful, not only for kids, but for all young at heart aged 2 to 122 years of age.

There are just so many wonderful memorable heart-stealing scenes, funny cute and poignant.

My five-year-old daughter was completely overcome by the film, and announced that she wants to transfer to "Madeline's school."

It's Paris in the 1950s (using real Paris locations), and Madeline is the smallest of the "twelve little girls in two straight lines" who attend a school inside a large house "covered in vines." Fans of the books and the animated television series can be assured that the actors are as close to the illustrations as it is possible for human actors to be, especially the delightful red-haired child playing Madeline.

Pepito, the Spanish ambassador's son, moves in next door and starts to cause havoc with his motorbike. Lord Covington (Nigel Hawthorne)puts the school up for sale and starts escorting other ambassadors through the premises. Genevive the dog saves Madeline from drowning, but can't be kept at the school. And there is a dastardly plot by some circus clowns to kidnap Pepito for ransom. Madeline saves the day all round, and everything ends happily ever after.

Charming in every detail.
