Product Description

Product Description

This is a non-fiction account of the author's daughter's first three years. From her first days, Brian Hall has been fascinated by her interactions with the world around her - what she noticed, what she cared about, and what links she made. By the time of her third birthday, she was living in a rich complex of games, fears and dreams that had points of contact with the adult world, but that spun on its own axis. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

WE KNEW almost nothing about her before she was born, not even her sex, so we must have referred to her as "it," although I can't imagine that now. Read the first page

This is a book that deals sensitively and intricately with a child's development, without ever sounding like a textbook. What I like about it is the way the Brian Hall is clearly fascinated by his daughter; while most parents have funny stories to tell about what their small child said or did the other day, Hall actually questions and tries to get to the roots of the obscure and seemingly random things that Madeleine says/does/is afraid of. This book is always fascinating , often touching and often very funny. Read it.

The forgotten years 12 July 2010
By Anne
Format:Paperback
A very interesting read, even for people who have no children (such as myself) - it's our own journey as well that's being described, the forgotten or never consciously remembered years from 0 to 3.

Wonderful 10 Mar 2006

This is a truly wonderful account of a journey into parenthood. Beautifully written, Hall makes such detailed observations of his daughter's fist 3 years, beginning just before she was born. This book is very easy to read and is a delight for any soon-to-be or new parent. I read it when I was expecting my first baby and read it again when he was 6 months old. It was a perfect way to rekindle those fond but distant memories of sleepless nights, pacing, singing, bouncing and all those amazing firsts.
a precious gem of a book 26 Jan 2009
By Penni Russon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
My oldest daughter is five now, and I think I have read the book at least five times, for every year of being a mother. This is not a 'how to', instead it is a gloriously rich and thoughtful reflection on Madeleine's coming into being. We observe Madeleine creating herself through her interactions with the world around her, her relationship with her devoted parents, through the world of books and through her acquisition of (and play with) language. Towards the end we get haunting flashes of insight into her developing interior world. I adore this book, and I am so glad it is part of me being a mother. This is a book about children and parenthood, but it's also a book about being human.
