Book Description

17 Jan 2012 Landscapes
Now in its 11th edition, this is THE book that made walking on Madeira so popular. In print since 1981, with over half a million copies sold.

This pocket-sized guide describes six car tours (with fold-out touring map), highlighting places where you can stop for a walk or just a stroll to a lovely picnic setting.

But the major part of the book is devoted to 100 different long and short walk routes, all illustrated with large-scale topographical maps (1:40,000).

While keen hillwalkers have long known about the island's mountainous terrain (the island is one of Europe's top destinations for mountain walks), what has attracted visitors of all ages and abilities is the opportunity to walk the 'levadas' - the paths beside the island's irrigation channels.

6 car tours (with accompanying touring map), 100 long and short walks (each illustrated with 1:40,000 topo map), 27 picnic suggestions. Plan of Funchal. Free online update service with specific route change information on the publisher's website, maintained daily.

The 'Landscapes' series, with 50 destinations, has been dubbed 'the blue Bibles' by the Sunday Times and led to Sunflower being one of only four publishers (from a field of 18) chosen as a Which? Recommended Provider of Guidebooks.

A remarkable paperback which may have done more than any other to change the way its readers spend their holidays: this book single-handedly turned levada-walking into something approaching a craze. --(Sunday Times)

We were greatly impressed with the detail, accuracy and comprehensiveness of the guide and with the research that obviously went into it. May I congratulate you on the best guidebook that I have come across. Despite having lived in, and visited, the Lake District over 60 years where there is a surfeit of guidebooks, I have not met your equal. --(Comment from a user who told us that while working in Madeira in the 1950s he had explored the island relying on a pre-war map and his sense of direction; lately he had returned to the island for the first time in 46 years.)

The best way to discover Madeira. --(BE, Amazon)

5.0 out of 5 stars The best way to discover Madeira 20 July 2009
We were going to Madeira to see the island and appreciate all aspects of its landscapes, we bought some books and maps, this was the one we used.
Following its suggestion we were able to discover every corner of the beautiful countryside, the mountain and coastal scenery, and to hike on the levada routes.
The book offers clear directions to trailheads, useful landmarks on hiking trails and difficulty ratings.
A general map and all detailed maps are included, walks are illustrated with colour pictures and detailed easy to follow instructions how to get to your destination.
We bought this as a walking guide, but it also has car tours and plenty of useful, picnics area and bus timetables.
We are going to buy other Sunflower book to plan our hiking holiday.

5.0 out of 5 stars See the real Madeira 25 Mar 2009
Use this book if you want to walk or tour in the real Madeira. It includes some well known walks but also includes many you might never find on your own. On some walks the few other hikers you meet are also carrying this book (frequently in a different language) as this is the original walkers' guide for the island. We have visited Madeira many times and always find something new through this book. We would never go without taking the latest edition and it is also worth downloading the latest free update to the book from the Sunflower website because of the amount of new building on the island.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable 27 Jan 2012
By Fred
This concerns a previous edition. I loved my stay in Madeira and that was especially because of the walking, for which you really need a good guide book. I found the Landscapes book exactly that. Neat format, excellent descriptions so you can choose from a variety of options. Indications of how to reach starting points and very good instructions - no question of getting lost! It all makes a perfect package for the independent walker. Highly recommended - I always look now for a Landscapes book when I plan a walking holiday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Family walking in Madeira 2 Dec 2009
We recently spent a week relaxing and walking in Madeira with our 4-year old son and had a marvellous time. However it wouldn't have been half as interesting and spectacular had we not packed the Sunflower walking guide. We have used these before in the Canary Islands and this edition didn't disappoint!

What is unique about Madeira though are the 'levadas' or concrete water channels that can be found all over the island. Some are little more than an enclosed stream with a gentle path adjacent while others cling vertiginously to sheer cliffs with the only space to walk being the edge of the channel! The Sunflower guide took us to both extremes and while shepherding a toddler along above a long drop isn't for the faint-hearted the views were worth it!

Sadly on this trip we weren't in a position to take on some of the longer and more challenging hikes but luckily the guide provides a wide range of options and even the shortest walks take you off of the beaten track. You have to be aware though that sometimes this means that way-marks will disappear and while the guide does it's very best to keep you on track you can't just switch off and stroll along!

Finally another strong point of this and other guides is that they include excellent maps of both the walks and the entire island. There have been many times when we've used these maps in preference to any other road map as they're always both accurate and detailed.

The only caveat that I might apply to this edition is that it looks like a new version will be coming out next year. Nevertheless whichever edition you buy I'm certain that you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Madeira Sunflower Guide - Can't beat it 20 Jun 2009
We purchased the guide, "Madeira - Car Tours and Walks" prior to our first visit to Madeira in 2008. It became a valuable and accurate guide to both car tours and walks, as the title suggests.

On our first visit to Madeira, we took my mother and her sister, who are a little too old to walk, so we used the car tour parts of the book to drive them around the island and point out the sights. It was useful for us also, as without it we would not have known which routes to take or where the sights were, despite having done research prior on the internet. I had even downloaded walking guides from a Madeira website, but the descriptions there were easily bettered by the book - in fact there was no comparison, the book was fantastic.

With regards to the walks, the descriptions are good enough to give a mental image of what to expect, and therefore which walks would most suite. All walks we took were relatively easy to follow, and there was just the odd occasion where we were a little unsure. After a few steps in the wrong direction, you will know about it, as the book describes what you should expect to come across based upon time walking. Tip; make sure you know when you started walking and if you have stopped, for how long, as this aids you in following the walk descriptions.

That year, we did three drives described in the book and four walks.

We returned to Madeira in 2009 and used the same book again. The fold-out maps on a few pages were a little worn but still intact and easy to read. This year, we did ten walks from the book, and so all in all we have done 14 different walks from it. The book also appears in many of the photo's I've taken whilst walking as my wife referred to it for directions and to see how much further we had to walk.

We are planning to walk in Italy next, and the Sunflower guide will definitely be there with us.
