Product Description

Amazon Review

You love Port ... you've touched on Sherry ... you have more than a passing interest in things vinous and, added to that, you want to delve deep into the secrets of a very special fortified wine with which you can wow your wine-worldy friends. Alex Liddell has done a Mastermind on Madeira. It's a specialist subject, which appeals to few, but, to those few, it's a subject that will fascinate both on the history front and the wine front.

This is as much a history book, as it is a wine book. It follows Madeira: The Country as closely as it does Madeira: The Wine. >From starving peasants in the 1700s to the fascist dictatorship which ended not a quarter of a century ago.

Madeira is a masterpiece to those who want or need to know and a bore to those who just want to drink the stuff. It is well researched and, with the exception of 20 pages of author's notes on specific wines, is totally factual. How nice to know, however, that some of Barbieto's 1795 Terrantez is available and that is still improving with age. If only everyone could stay that when they were over 200 years old. --Nick Tarayan
