Product Description

Product Description

Now in its 10th edition, this is THE book that made walking on Madeira so popular. In print since 1981, with over half a million copies sold. Pocket-sized and in full colour, the guide describes six car tours (with fold-out touring map), highlighting places where you can stop for a walk or just a stroll to a lovely picnic setting. But the major part of the book is devoted to 100 different long and short walk routes, illustrated with large-scale topographical maps (1:40,000). While keen hillwalkers have long known about the island's mountainous terrain, what has attracted visitors of all ages and abilities is the opportunity to walk the 'levadas' the paths beside the island's irrigation channels. The Sunday Times said: 'A remarkable paperback which may have done more than any other to change the way its readers spend their holidays; this book single-handedly turned levada-walking into something approaching a craze.'

Excellent 5 Nov 2010
There is no other word to describe this book...EXCELLENT!
I live and work in Madeira (in tourism) and if any of my customers get car hire I always lend them this book. It contains absolutely everything.
Very clear instructions regarding car routes and also levada/walking routes (however you should NEVER take a levada walk without an expert guide. Some of the levadas in Madeira can be very dangerous and there has been a lot of changes since the floods and landslides of February 2010)
THIS BOOK WAS ACTUALLY RELEASED ON 19TH FEBRUARY 2010 AND WE HAD THE FLOODS AND MUDSLIDES ON 2OTH FEBRUARY 2010 - JUST TO ADVISE

What I liked most about the book is: Once you purchased the latest book, you can get the latest update submitted by the author and readers online for free. It is especially useful since Madeira has suffered 2 major disasters in 2010. A flood in February and a forest fire in August, which affected the footpaths. You do not have to wait for the latest update until the next publication. Online update seems to be processed fairly quickly, since my contribution of update went online in about a week.
I also like the fact that it provides the access information by public transport.
Route instructions on main walks are mostly easy to follow. Less so on alternative walks and short walks: I had to read several times to make sense of where they start and where they end; Some do not have detailed information about the time/distance to reach the nearest bus stop to end or access the walk.
The maps are useful. It would be more helpful if the starting and finishing points are marked on them.
I would also like to see the course time between two points. The book shows the course time since the start. Once I had a break, I often lost the count. As I walked a little faster than the book, the difference become larger toward the end of the walk.

Madeira walks 30 April 2011
A convenient sized book, fits into a pocket or backpack neatly. A few car tours at the beginning should not put you off - the walks are well described and reasonably accurate. The local bus information is helpful if you are staying in or near Funchal - I wasn't, there was only one bus a day from our hotel, so I was somewhat restricted.
The book however, survived a soaking! On advice I layered toilet paper between the pages as it dried - used a whole roll, but the pages didn't stick! Like so many guide books, it's more use in retrospect; to enjoy the walks now I am home.

Very useful guide, heavy focus on walking tours though.
Bought the book for a visit to Madeira with my wife. The book is very well presetted and useful but is heavily biased towards walking, the car tours part is small by comparison. Read more
