Product Description

Product Description

THE book that made walking on Madeira so popular. In print since 1981, with over half a million copies sold. Pocket-sized and in full colour, the guide describes six car tours (with fold-out touring map), highlighting places where you can stop for a walk or just a stroll to a lovely picnic setting. But the major part of the book is devoted to 100 different long and short walk routes, illustrated with large-scale topographical maps (1:40,000). While keen hillwalkers have long known about the island's mountainous terrain, what has attracted visitors of all ages and abilities is the opportunity to walk the 'levadas' - the paths beside the island's irrigation channels. The Sunday Times said: 'A remarkable paperback which may have done more than any other to change the way its readers spend their holidays; this book single-handedly turned levada-walking into something approaching a craze.' Walking on Madeira is superb all year round. Walks can be done from a hired car or by using the excellent public bus network (the book contains copious up-to-date timetables, one of its key features). The authors spend a month on the island every year, rechecking the routes, and maintain a unique on-line update service to keep users abreast of any route changes since publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars See the real Madeira, 25 Mar 2009

This review is from: Madeira: Car Tours and Walks (Landscapes) (Paperback)
Use this book if you want to walk or tour in the real Madeira. It includes some well known walks but also includes many you might never find on your own. On some walks the few other hikers you meet are also carrying this book (frequently in a different language) as this is the original walkers' guide for the island. We have visited Madeira many times and always find something new through this book. We would never go without taking the latest edition and it is also worth downloading the latest free update to the book from the Sunflower website because of the amount of new building on the island.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 5 Nov 2010

There is no other word to describe this book...EXCELLENT!
I live and work in Madeira (in tourism) and if any of my customers get car hire I always lend them this book. It contains absolutely everything.
Very clear instructions regarding car routes and also levada/walking routes (however you should NEVER take a levada walk without an expert guide. Some of the levadas in Madeira can be very dangerous and there has been a lot of changes since the floods and landslides of February 2010)
THIS BOOK WAS ACTUALLY RELEASED ON 19TH FEBRUARY 2010 AND WE HAD THE FLOODS AND MUDSLIDES ON 2OTH FEBRUARY 2010 - JUST TO ADVISE

5.0 out of 5 stars The best way to discover Madeira, 20 July 2009
This review is from: Madeira: Car Tours and Walks (Landscapes) (Paperback)
We were going to Madeira to see the island and appreciate all aspects of its landscapes, we bought some books and maps, this was the one we used.
Following its suggestion we were able to discover every corner of the beautiful countryside, the mountain and coastal scenery, and to hike on the levada routes.
The book offers clear directions to trailheads, useful landmarks on hiking trails and difficulty ratings.
A general map and all detailed maps are included, walks are illustrated with colour pictures and detailed easy to follow instructions how to get to your destination.
We bought this as a walking guide, but it also has car tours and plenty of useful, picnics area and bus timetables.
We are going to buy other Sunflower book to plan our hiking holiday.
