madeira by bus; the only sane way to travel, 5 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Madeira has to have some of the worst driving and drivers I have ever seen. Hire cars are only for the insane when the island has one of the best bus services you can find anywhere in Europe, and at pocket money prices.
We found this map invaluable for planning our routes around the island and taking in some walking; and we saw far more of Madeira than you will ever see crouched behind a steering wheel. It seems to have everything we needed and for a couple of pounds was our best buy of the holiday.

better than it looks, 3 Oct 2006
This appears very flimsy and not very clear but I found it more useful than the Biaritz map I also bought. It has lots of useful tourist info, like cafes/bars and viewpoints as well as a huge number of walks marked on it. The road information is not quite up to date (hardly surprising since they seem to be continually upgrading/building new ones). Contrary to other reports I found the Madeiran drivers friendly and polite and driving was not a problem, but the busses are regular and get into even the most unlikely places - and this map will helpm you find the right one if you need them.

A useful map.., 7 Jun 2008
This review is from: Madeira Bus and Touring Map (Paperback)
This is a useful map. Two sided, one side is a streetmap of Funchal, size 40cm x 60cm, with all districts and the major roads named. It marks all the town bus routes and their terminuses. There is also a table showing details of their routes, and notes about bus services, etiquette, frequency... It would not be a substitute for a tourists plan of the very centre of Funchal, (though you can pick these up free everywhere).
The other side is a map of the island, 50cm x 80cm, scale 1:60,000, 5cm=3km, showing roads, contours, tourist information, a place-name index, plus details of the across-island bus routes, with timetable information for some routes. It would be a good map for someone touring the island.. though David Brawn's Tour & Trail map is at a larger scale and so can show more detail. I was glad I bought both maps before I went, as maps on sale in tourist shops were often much dearer than the price I paid on Amazon.
