5.0 out of 5 stars Single of the year?, 10 Jul 2006
By S. Davidson (Glasgow) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"Made Up Love Song#43" has undergone minor surgery since it first appeared on the "From the Cliffs" EP. Thankfully, though, the added backing vocals and effects have merely improved on an already winning formula. Quite simply, MULS is the best single to appear this year, and by some way. It is the perfect showcase for Fyfe Dangerfield's diverse vocal abilities, and for the complementarity and tightness of the band's rhythm section. It is a three minute pop delight!

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely beautiful, 26 Jun 2006
This song is a gorgeous little slice of lo-fi indie pop. it has a lovely, summery melody that is matched by original but heartfelt lyrics ('i love you like sparks and shining dragons, i do. Now there's poetry in an empty coke can').
And what could be just another love song, is a charming, quirky and spine-tingling effort from a band who could well be a modern day answer to The Beatles or Beach Boys. Guillemots' style may range from avant-garde jazz to fuzzy post rock (via orchestral sweepings and junkyard rattlings, depending on which song you hear), but ultimately, they write fantastic pop songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Proper music for proper people, 21 Jun 2006

We like Guillemots despite their seabird referencing sobriquet and lack of a definitive article. they're amd as hatters in a proper, eccentric way, not in a 'see me, I'm flipping wacky' way or a 'wooh, I'm drunk on cider and black, and therefore kerazy' way. Facts - wacky isn't amusing and drunks are boring. And those are real facts not internet facts.

Anyway, this is another splendid single which you really ought to buy if you have any semblance of taste. Even if you don't have taste, buy it anyway. That way your friends will think you have taste, which is almost as good as having taste, but not, and they will then invite you to do interesting and innovative things. Possibly with string.

Oh, and this is a glistening, melodic pop tune, a bit Mercury rev, soaring when it needs to without conforming to the big book of pop cliches. And all in under 3 minutes. On the radio edit, anyway. As it should be. Ask The Temptations how long "Get Ready" is. Proper music for proper people.
