When you install the product, you are asked to enter a user name, password, and e-mail address. You need to think about the password, because it cannot be changed. The process requires a live connection to the Internet, and in due course you are e-mailed an activation code. Once activated, you can configure Made Safe options for one or more users. Add-on modules include an Internet filter that can block pop-up windows, chat rooms, or sites containing specified keywords. Also available at extra cost is the Vault, which lets you upload files to a secure remote server, so that they remain safe even if your computer is lost, stolen or broken.
This is the first iteration of Made Safe and there are some problems. The documentation is poor, and online help is limited to pop-up balloon help. The system can have problems with firewalls, and in fact the installer advises you to turn off your firewall and anti-virus protection, which is remarkable for a security product. Finally, the interface is non-standard and fails to alert you sensibly when things go wrong. This is a case of a good idea, but the implementation leaves room for improvement.--Tim Anderson
