Rachid Taha is the most adventurous of North Africa's Westward-looking pop musicians, and Made in Medina is his best release yet. Forget "world music" -- this is rock, full of jagged guitars and clobbering beats. It has the sure-footedness of a man who knows exactly where he's going, and it's his first album to capture the excitement of his live shows, thanks to his long-time producer, Steve Hillage, who co-wrote many of the songs. If you know Taha only from the "1, 2, 3 Soleils" video and CD, this is a much looser, rowdier incarnation, and all the better for it.
